A little while ago a fox came and took most (all but two) of my girls, one big and one silkie survived.
My big girl had bunches of bald spots where it took her feathers.
I have been looking at her and under her chest around to the top of her legs now looks like she has been plucked - I haven't...
Are foxes really that cunning? I went out last week for an hour in the middle of the day. I took my dogs with me for the drive and all my girls were in my enclosed back garden eating away.
When I came back four of them were gone, two remained – one silkie and one big girl.
I have a gate which...
Yesterday afternoon I went out for an hour, in that time whilst my girls were in my enclosed back garden a predator (presuming a fox) came in and took three of my four girls. One survived. She has lost some feathers but otherwise seems to be ok.
She clearly needs some friends and I have found...
One of my silkies has started crowing - but you know when you walk up to your girls and they squat down with their wings out for you to pat them (guessing they think I am a ro), well this Silkie is still doing that - is he a she? Is this normal? Thank you!
I have three silkies and one has started making the gurgling crowing noises, I don't know who as they don't do it when I can SEE them!
What I would like to know please is...
Are two hens enough for a silkie? I have five big girls as but the Silkies won't leave their run when I open it out he...
Not sure if this is the right place to put this but wanted to let everyone in Sydney Australia know that there is a totally WONDERFUL vet at Pittwater Animal Hospital called Bryn who just saved my chickens (sooty) lifeI
I noticed the other day that she was all puffed up and she wasn’t as keen...
I have three silkies, one grown up and two babies - who seem to have a simply endless appetite! I feed them in a bowl each morning (they don't like to eat from the ground!) and they then have another one at lunchtime when everyone has a snack and then another one before they go to bed - mind...
Hello!
I have three silkies and five big girls - the silkies live in a house and run of their own in the back garden and the big girls free range - they spend a bit of time around the silkies run as they can come and go as they please, they seem to like each other through the fence.
If I let...
My silkies live in an aviary and I have tarps around the open sides at night to keep them warm, they have woodshavings and hay on the floor and a roosting box but I kept worrying they would be cold when winter arrived. After reading this forum I decided to buy them a small dog kennel and put...
I have two silkies and I just love them. Yesterday the garden man came and mowed our back garden (they have a house and run in there), usually they put themselves in their house in disgust. I looked, saw Fizzy and assumed Coco was next to her; they are always together - until later in the...
Well, It looks to me like there is a bit of bone sticking out the side of Wonkys toe which my horse trod on - we are off to the vet today but they were talking about possible amputation of the toe - is that too traumatic for a chicken? I kind of hoped it could heal around it and to get...
My girls free range and I also have a horse who is extremely sweet, but by accident yesterday she caught one of the girls (Wonky) toes under her hoof as she turned to follow me - now the toe is a bit flattened, Wonky is in the cat cage with food and water and is standing on it and talking like...
I have two - they are about a month or six weeks apart in age - when we got our first one, the lady was returning her as they thought she was going to die, so we took her - she was flat in the box and we also thought she was going to die, but we fed and watered her and the next day she was round...
Much to my delight my silkie has started laying eggs! Having read various posts I didn't really expect them to (I have two fluffies).
What I would like to know, is, will it happen for long? It seems that everyone says they are not regular layers and that they are a broody type - she has laid for...
Apologies if this has been asked somewhere else, I have looked but can't find information....
Onslow, who was attacked by the dog and survived has turned into a very handsome and friendly rooster - he (now) has been crowing for a week but only first thing in the mornings.
What I would like...
...so despite taking Onslow back to the chicken man when she was younger and him laughing at me and insisting she was a girl, and despite her being attacked by a dog and us going off to the vet who didn't notice she WASNT a girl (one of her wounds was round her bottom area) Onslow crowed this...
My Onslow (the sweetest chicken around) was just attacked by a dog - she has an open wound towards the bottom half of her side, I know you say taking them to the vet kills them but surely this calls for a visit? What else can I do? Any suggestions on treatment? She is my most tame of the girls...
Walter has a sore leg - I don't know how she did it but yesterday she was limping a little bit, by the end of the day (they free range) she was sitting more than moving about with the others but still eating and quite happy in herself.
Today I have left them all in, I can't see what is wrong...
I have three chickens, two are younger and one of them, today, stopped 'tweeting' but now sounds a bit like a duck - I don't recall that happening before....I did have her sexed but now am worried she may be a he... I really really like her, she is so friendly and curious.
I have two silkies who are lovely - they sleep in an aviary at night and have a fenced off grassy run during the day - I have made them two sand baths - one is in their preferred hanging out area and one around the side of the aviary with a plant for shade. I filled them with sand from my...
