    Hen walks like a duck

She's a four year old black australorp. She started acting different 2 days ago, hanging out by herself. Yesterday she acted like she was going to lay an egg in the outdoor pen, ruffling up her feathers and walking with her butt almost dragging along the ground. But she was lively and didn't...

    aracauna hen to hatch chicks

Babyface is special, gray and has wild, wicked look to her. I have saved her eggs and a few of another brownish aracauna hens eggs for about a week now and she looks to be starting to get broody. She spends all afternoon on the fake eggs, but so far gets off at night. I plan on "transfering" her...

Hen dying. What could it be??

My 3 year old rir is sick. It started about 5 days ago. She was alittle"off". 2 days later, I dewormed the whole flock. I hadn't done that since I got them and they are a little thin. Each day she regresses alittle more. It's like watching an Alzheimer's patient who stops eating and slowly gets...

Has anyone seen the news that they are being captured and relocated. If I missed a newer post, I'm sorry, but I would really like to help and I want to adopt some of the chickens. I just need to know how to go about doing this. Has anyone adopted a chicken from Key West and I would like to know...

    A Hummer of a Tale

Yesterday I was transplanting a couple of vines to a more sunny location since they were 3 years old and stunted. As I was putting the second one in the ground, a hummingbird started hovering, getting closer, then darting back getting real curious! I told my husband to watch it and sure enough...

    Window shades

Does anyone put up anything in their coop windows to keep the sun out, let light in and the breeze go through? I'm thinking about the shades that are used in cars to shade a baby from the sun. Would that work? Merry

    foxes, rabies and eggs

My hens came into contact with a fox 3 days ago. The 2 I found alive had direct enough contact, maybe bites(didn't see any), but 1 was in his mouth. Most likely the fox was feeding babies, but what if?? He could have been carrying rabies . Would that transmit to the eggs. Would you guys eat...

Lost their freedom, lost their rooster

Due to a fox, so now we are down from 12 hens and 1 rooster, to just 9 hens. They had been free ranging, but now will be confined to their house and a large pen. I noticed this morning 1 of the hens(who loved the rooster and hung right by his side) chasing another hen. I think she was...

    Darn fox!!

I have had my 12 hens free ranging for about 3 weeks. I was getting supper yesterday and looked out the window and a fox was carrying a chicken across the back yard. I ran out and he dropped her and she ran off. I counted and 4 hens and the rooster were missing. I found 3 dead hens and I found...

    Feather pickers

I am so tired of the chickens picking feathers. My hens look a mess. They should be fluffy , puffy hens, instead they look terrible! Even the rooster is getting his neck and butt picked. I have 12 hens and a rooster, all about 1 year old. 1 week ago I let them free range on over 2 acres. They...

    fresh eggs

I gave my stepson some fresh egg about 1 month ago. He said'" Can I eat them?" I said,"Of, course, silly. They are better than store bought!" Last night he came to visit. He said" You know those eggs you gave me were an odd color and had blood spot in them." I couldn't believe it about the blood...

    Growing grass(No!! Not THAT kind!!)

I want to grow something in the chicken pen. Its a muddy mess right now. I would like a quick growing grass or grain so that when they have to be put in there, they will have fresh greens. I would hope to keep it seeded all summer for new growth. Any suggestions? Merry

    Boundry fence

I need to put up something between the next house and mine. They have dogs, but are on the invisible fence. I'm just afraid my hens may get too close as the aren't afraid of our dogs. I don't need it electrofied.I guess it should be a woven mesh approx 50 ft x 3 ft tall. Any company's carry...

    Key West chickens

Has any one read Katha Sheehan's book, "Tales of an Island Rooster"? I love the Key West chickens, but now feel so bad for their hard life. Yet, it was a deciding factor for letting my feather picking chickens out of their pen this spring, to free range, despite the potential dangers. Sometimes...

    Chickens out!! Whoopee!!

Today, I let the chickens out the front( chicken)door instead of the side( chicken) door that goes to their pen(which is muddy). There is a patch of bare ground in the sun that they stayed in and happily scratched through soggy leaves and other earthy stuff. They seemed to really enjoy it. I...
