After a long long struggle with internal laying, Molly is so close to death.
This morning was the first time she seemed n pain, and now at 11pm, I had just held her for two hours and thought each breath was her last.
I have never euthanized and now i feel awful that I didn't do it already...
4 year old RIR, hasnt laid an egg in weeks that i know of. Has a large softball size firm mass on one side towards her rear. I ve bathed and massaged her. She has gotten poopy butt since her bath a few days ago. I have her seprated because other hens pecking her. Her abdomen does not feel...
I have a 4 year old rhode island red, Molly (Ringwald), Who seems to be egg bound/ internal laying. I have given her warm baths and massages, however can feel a very firm softball size mass on one side and an egg sized mass on the other. I suppose it could also be tumourous.
She has slowly...
yes, I just introduced a single new hen to my dear beloved 5 girls.
No, the new hen does not show any symptoms of being sick, she was thoroughly examined, bathed and briefly quarantined.
4 days later my most beautiful, large healthy hen is wheezing with a honk and has clear watery eye bubbles...
I think my cuckoo maran fell out of her box and broke her wing. It is just the lower half of the wing, it is sticking out at a funny angle and the very tip of her wing bone is protruding through the skin a little.
Should I set the wing back in place??
Please help, this just happend a few...
She is over a year old and has had perfectly straight toes, until recently. one of her side toes is crooked now.
Do you think it broke? She walks fine and doesn't seem in pain. If it broke would it just heal on its own?
All the vitamin deficiency cases seem to apply to chicks...
Hi, I have a hen inside recovering from a dog bite wound. She is doing great.
She was used to being outside in RI for the winter, but now she is alone inside our construction zone kitchen which is about 56 degrees.
Do you think that is warm enough or should I bring in a heat lamp?
I guess I have earned myself a reputation as chicken doctor around here..... I was at a friends house and she said "Lea, a few days ago my neighbors dog bit one of my chickens, she has been roosting at night but has just been sitting by that bush for a couple days. Will you take a look at her?"...
If anyone is in or near South County, RI there is a chicken coop tour happening next weekend. Folks are opening up their coops for people to check out and ask questions about raising backyard chickens.
Let me know if anyone in the area is interested or would like to be on the list and I will...
I have a chance to buy 2 one week old pullets and am really tempted to get them! But I feel like I read how they are a little aggressive and standoff-ish?
They would be my first bantams joining 5 one and two yr old hens. I think they are beautiful but I want nice birds!
Any thoughts?
I know there are MANY factors that can shorten a chickens life. And I have heard different estimates on how long a perfectly healthy chicken can live, like up to 8 - 10 years!
But I just heard someone say how all of her chickens died of "old age" at 4 years old!
How old is your oldest chicken...
Hi,
I want to make an indoor dust bath for my girls. No one is selling the play sand you can buy at hardware stores (not in season).
Is beach sand OK to use? I collected it far away from the water or high tide line thinking it would be less salty.
Any reason why it would be bad?
I plan on...
Hi,
A friend is trying to hatch a single egg in one of those very simple plastic dome incubators.
Yesterday was hatch date, how long should she wait to see if anyone is in there alive?
She did not candle early on.
There was some question to fertility.
thanks!
I haven't seen them in hatchery catalogs. Curious where to get a few hens. Anyone have or know where? They seem like cool birds. Do you have anything to say about them?
They seem like great chickens. Anyone know a good place for them? Just looking for 2 or 3, I would prefer hens only but am considering getting an incubator.
Getting excited for spring and to fill up my new big coop!
I just lost my first chicken. and of course she was very special.
Because the ground is frozen solid I'm not sure what to do with her?
I loved this girl and want to treat her right. Any suggestions?
I'm really going to miss her knocking on the door for yogurt.
Chickenhawk had a very severe crossed beak but did ok with wet mash food and yogurt. She laid the bluest eggs of the flock!
But was always hungry and a little too lean, but that meant she could fly unlike any chicken I ever saw! She...
I have a malnourished chicken (because of beak deformity) and now she is weakened from mites. Can I dust with Permethrin? or is the poison too strong for a weak bird?
I will do the rest of my flock and clean coop. Just want to know if this one girl can take it?
Thanks
Hello,
I have two newbies, a cuckoo maran and a RIR both the same age. At least one of them started laying about three weeks ago (they are my only brown eggers).
I have gotten one beautiful rich brown egg a day. Mostly they look the same but sometimes one seems to have a haze on it making...
