I've been absent for a few months, moving, illness etc. But I'm back, I hope for a long time. In my absence, who are the current moderators?
Thanks in advance,
Mac
Soon we will be replenishing our flock of aged hens, now down to 3 bantams and 3 RIR's. They are nearly 6 years old now. They will live out their lives with us.
I have one bantam cochin, Rootbeer, (my personal favorite) who has in the past been very broody. I would love to order a dozen...
hi all, its the "other" Mac. been away for a few months, missed you. in short, my husband broke his leg, and i broke my collar bone, plus we moved to the farm, hence the shortness of this message and bad typing. i have only one wing.
one of my 4 rir hens, 5 yrs old has swollen feet. not...
Yesterday my husband went to the farm before me, slipped on the ice and heard a big pop from his leg. He crawled 25' to the phone we installed in the garage and called me, then called 911.
When I got to the ER I ran in and saw a few nurses and doctors standing around a bed, which turned out to...
He has always known I loved birds, since I've raised guineas and peafowl. When we got the new place, and also the seller's chickens,
we were both happy with them, although he has never been around big birds and I have. Never stopped him a minute. Here is what my great guy has done over the...
For those of you who have purchased and used one - do you like them? If so, where online did you purchase it, and what brand did you buy? I see most of you mount them about a foot above the bedding which is what I would do.
I'm measuring my coop today and after I hear from you guys and your...
When my husband and I bought our farmette, we also bought the 4 year old hens too. 5 Prod. Reds and 4 bantams. None of these hens have ever been out of the coop. They did have a small insecure run which we tore down and rebuilt larger and so secure I can bearly get in.
The dilemma. For 5...
Just recently someone (I'm sorry, I can't remember who did) posted some pics of their chickens. The cutest one was of this HUGE buff orp hen and this little rooster. I guess the hen was not impressed with his ardor towards her.
Any help inn locating?
Thanks
Mac
Is what I've been doing since I got the chickens. About 8" of shavings, give or take, and added to as needed. Then I was reading one of the books I bought before finding this site and it mentioned you can't use DLM unless you have a dirt floor. Won't compost. I guess I can see that, but we...
Front of coop next to the barn, on right.
The back of the coop and run.
The most beautiful hen of all....Michelle Pfeiffer.
Some of the girls. We think the big hens are RIR. Does anyone think they are production red?
Here's Pot Pie, our Mille Fleurs (right?):
Pot Pie (rear view) and a...
This is a test to see if I understand how to post images.
Here's a picture of our coop. The run is on the right but you can only see the top of it behind the fence. Here goes...
I have a lot of floor space in my coop, or I should say my "hen's" coop. Anyway, its filled with about 8" of shavings. Their run is 2/3 sand, 1/3 soil and they have a ton of fun scratching around taking dirt/sand baths. Before I got them they only had rocks and no place to scratch around in...
Wow, my first post here that is not a question! I actually can make a contribution!
My run has been completed for about a month now. It is 10x13x5. The old run was dirt and rock compressed to about concrete hardness by decades of chicken feet and unusable. After reading flooring options...
Thanks to all regarding mite and worming questions/amswers. I will deal with the mites this weekend. My coop floor is 10'x14', I am using the deep litter method and lots of DE. The coop is really sweet smelling, no flies and clean. I hate to have to take out 6" of shavings and lots of DE to...
Thanks to all of you and this website I was able to get enough information to start my "mite eradication" this weekend.
However, these 11 chickens have never been handled and clear out when I enter the coop. So, what to do to catch the chickens? I can't do it after they roost because despite...
I was collecting eggs this morning and noticed little black specks all over most of them.
About the size of a pencil point. I touched them and they smeared. Then I LOOKED at them for a few seconds and they MOVED. Since adopting my chickens I have cleaned out their coop and nesting boxes...
Found an ad in Backyard Poultry magazine and a testimonial in another issue for this product.
Has anyone had any experience with this, either positive or negative?
Thanks
Mac
My chickens aren't free ranging yet so I feed them vegetables/treats in the coop and dirt run. I've been cutting them up and just tossing them out, trying to spread the treats all over so everyone gets some. Then they either get covered with shavings or dirt. Do you guys feed yours that way...
My 11 chickens (7 RIR, 2 black bantam cochins and one yet unknown bantam breed) have never had a roost, except for the rafters of the coop. I'm the one who inherited these guys with the farm I bought. This week they are getting a VERY safe run built, I've installed nesting boxes and they are...
