PLEASE bring back the chicken breeds chart!!

Just when I was going to make a final decision on which breeds I want this Spring...you delete the chicken breed chart. The new "breeds" page doesn't have an egg color choice to click on and when I checked on "cold", large production and layer there were no choices available. Please bring back...

    Check out our finished coop!

We just finished our new coop. My wonderful neighbor built it for us. It started with a floor which is 21" off the ground so the snow build up will not effect the Girls. Then the building began. It is 6' X 8' with a security screen door and solid door so in the hot weather I can have total...

    egg carton labels

I was fooling around with my computer today and this is what I've come up with for my egg cartons. I got the pics from microsoft.com and used my Printmaster 10 (an old program) to make the labels. I'm giggling to myself.

    We finally have eggs!!

Yahoo! One of the hens, I think it's Waltzing Matilda the Australorp, has started laying eggs. We've had an egg every day for 6 days. One egg was broken and the shell almost gone. That was the first day and I hadn't checked for eggs at all that day so I think since the hen house is so...

Rope lights in chicken coop work great!!!

I will have to take a picture tomorrow night but the rope light works great in the chicken coop! It's a mellow kind of light and it's on a timer that turns on at dusk for 3 hours (I can set it for up to 8 hours after dusk). I made a hard cloth tube and fed the rope light through it and mounted...

My chicks must be confused...I am.

My chicks are 20 weeks old now and their internal clock must be telling them to lay soon. But the weather is getting colder...down to 40's at night so their "coming on to Winter" clock must be telling them to slow down on the laying. I wonder which clock will win. Any idea?

Chicks and recycled cage bird seed??

Can 10 week old chicks eat/enjoy recycled caged bird seed? I have lots from my 4 Girls (Cockatiel, 2 Conures and a CAG). Sure would be nice to supplement my chicks instead of the wild birds.

    Yesterday was Chicken Moving Day

Yesterday was chicken moving day. The Girls were reluctant to go down the ramp to the run but with a little "push" from me they went down the ramp and ate their breakfast. Last night I had to shoo them "up" the ramp to go to bed in the coop. Tonight when I went out to give them their evening...

    Chicks and Aspen trees

In a week or so I'll be putting my 4 Girls out in their coop/enclosed run. We have many Aspen trees that come up from runners. Is it safe for my Girls to chew on the baby trees/leaves, etc.? Aspen shavings come from Aspen trees, right? I'm hoping the Girls will keep the baby trees in check.

    Development of combs

When do the combs on SL Wayndotte, Partridge Couchin and Australorps begin to develop? My Girls are 15 days old and I do seem some longer beak development but nothing looking red yet. Just curious.

    My babies are GENIUSES!!!!

One of the 4 girls ran into a water nipple and said, "What's this?" She started playing with it and the other 3 came over to join in. Now they all know where the nipples are and how to use them!! I showed them every day for the first 3 and actually gave up for a couple of days. They are Genius...

    Brooder too big?

I order the starter kit from www.mypetchicken.com I'm getting 4 chicks in a few weeks but the cardboard brooder looks GIGANTIC! I'm wondering if I should put a smaller box in the middle of the brooder for the first few days OR should I just take out some of the cardboard slats to decrease the...

What if my coop is small?

I just assembled my "Four Square" coop from MyPetChicken.com. It is just big enough for 4 full grown chickens. My chicks are coming in mid-May. Looking at the inside of the coop - I can't figure out WHERE I could put food AND water for the night. I am working on a nipple system and COULD put...

I'm a newbie from Auberry, California (5000' above Fresno)

Howdy! I'm new here and new to being a chicken mommy. I do, however, have 4 cage birds. An African Grey, a Sun Conure, a Dusky Conure and a Lutino Cockatiel. I'm sooooo excited because my 4 babies are coming May 17. I've ordered 1 of each (all females)...an Easter Egger - we'll name her...
