    Paul Gautschi/Garden of Eden chickens?

I recently watched the Back to the Garden of Eden film. Very interesting. One thing that really got my attention was his chickens. From what I can gather, he throws all yard/garden waste in the pen. Also throws wood ash in. Claims there's no smell and the dirt in the pen appeared to be...

Brinsea Eco, embryos dying just before hatch

I feel like I've lost my incubation mojo. A friend had borrowed our incubator for a year or so and had GREAT hatches. Often 100% hatch rate. I have the incubator now & I'm having problems. We set 32 chicken eggs, 26 hatched. I checked those that didn't. Couple had a fair amount of yolk still...

    Need serious landscape help.

We are trying to sell our home & we have a large chicken pen. It's just not attractive to buyers. We are not in a "farm" type of neighborhood. We've had several people look at the house & say that the chickens are "a major turn-off". We've decided that in order to sell this house & buy our...

Help - tom unsteady, falling down

This morning my midget white tom is very unsteady on his feet and at times is falling down. He then sits there on the ground. If the hens come by, he attempts to spread is feathers (strut from a sitting position is what it looks like). What to do?? We feed a custom mix w/ 24% protein. He's our...

    Dried out membrane troubles.

This is my 2nd year of hatching. Brinsea w/ autoturner. Last year I struggled in the beginning - turned out I was putting too much water in & there was not enough evaporation. Once I began to "dry hatch" this all cleared up & we had great hatches. At times 100% of developing eggs hatched. This...

    What is this coloring?

I have this BEAUTIFUL "mutt" and I just love her coloring. Is this known as black laced blue? Blue laced black? Blue laced blue? lol - how do I describe her feathering?

Distended abdomen, feathers missing (UPDATED/Necropsy) GRAPHIC

I have a Buckeye hen that is just over a year, has been in fine health but we find her today not moving around much. Upon examination, she is missing a large swath of feathers on her abdomen and her her abdomen (belly) on back to her vent seems quite firm and distended. What are we dealing...

    Light Sussex Pair

I have a pair of pure Light Sussex available. They are very large and very gentle. Both have just recently reached maturity & she is laying. Light Sussex are excellent dual purpose birds. These are not hatchery stock. Local pick up preferred but will drive within a 30 minute or so radius.

Ivermectin sheep drench same as pour-on??

Gracious. I was just heading out to treat the chickens for the first time w/ Ivermectin (used Wazine in the past) when I came here to double check the dosage. I notice everyone talking about Ivermectin Pour-On, Ivermectin Injectible....but nothing on "sheep drench", which is what my bottle says...

Scaly leg mites, feathers falling out, bumble

Of all the chickens, the ONE that I *promised* one of our sons that we would never sell or kill (unless to put her out of some misery or something), is the ONE with issues. None of the other chickens show any of the symptoms. So here is what I'm facing with Goldie... Bumble foot - I must be the...

    d'Uccle pair??

I really think these are a male and a female, but they sure do go at each other like little cockerels. I'd like to sell or re-home them but it would be good to have some other opinions on their sex before I do.

    Male runners??

I've read that if runner ducks have curly tail feathers, they are drakes. Do these look like all male tails? I have only 5 runner ducks. All of them have a feather or two on the tail with some curl to it. I tried to get some good pics of their tails this morning - they don't like to stand still...

Coming out of denial - low hatch rates

I think I'm ready to admit that something is just not quite right with my incubator & hatches. I just read this article on possible issues, http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/aa204. In general, I have 50% or lower hatch rates. On shipped eggs it's often 1-3 chicks from 12+ eggs. This has been super...

Silkie roo over standard/non-silkie - what do you get?

I have a gorgeous buff silkie roo and he is definitely mating with the hens in the flock. My hens are various non-silkie, standard size breeds. As far as the feather type - what will a silkie over standard feathered birds give you? Will the resulting offspring be anything at all pleasing to look...

    My nipple waterer experience

We're about 6 mo. in to our chicken watering with poultry nipples. I'm not happy. I like them for chicks in bin brooders because they're much less work than constantly cleaning out wood shavings & refiling water dishes. In my larger coop though, they are now failing. I'm finding that they are...

3 dys old w/ crusty eyes??

I have a BLRW chick in with 8 other chicks the same age. Both of its eyes had a little mucus on them yesterday. Today they're completely crusted over. Any ideas what this is? Is this common? How do I treat it? It seems odd that none of the other chicks in the brooder have it.

    Bumblefoot treatment not going well...

I posted a couple of days ago to ask what was going on with one of the hens. I've followed the tutorials of how to soak the foot, remove the scab, pull the plug. I removed 3 good size pieces of puss day before yesterday. Applied polysporin antibiotic cream, wrapped the foot in vetwrap, and have...

Foot with swelling & sore (pics)

This is the foot of our 1 yr old comet/RIR mix hen. She is the only hen that has seemed to battle scaly leg mites. We've done Vaseline, oil, and a linement which I can't recall the name of. We had 3 hens with this problem and the other two were rid of them. Goldie (this hen) has continued to...
