I have put my tomatoes in large pots, but the chickens fly up & eat the leaves. They also fly up to eat rose leaves. I have come up with some creative ideas, but I need more, esp in preparation for next spring & summer.
Thanks for all ideas - good, bad & too complicated ;) cos I'm not very...
But today, I found a green egg again - finally. I am so happy.
She must have enjoyed the beautiful summery day today, after a long spell of cold gray, wet weather.
But, my other EE still hasn't laid since the Christmas Eve mayhem.
Sunny: Leghorn born March 9, 2010. Has 5 flock members.
Weather: cold & rainy
Habits: free-range all day in back yard; sleep in smallish coop at night. It does seem big enough, though. They are not crowded when they roost. Also, there is room for them to all fit on the floor, and move (but...
Do I treat her as an egg-eater in the making? It seems like a natural precursor. The eggs are beautiful & the shells hard.
What I have been doing, is watching her when I can, around egg-laying time.
It has happened 2x; once I found the pecked egg, & next time she was in the coop with the...
And do they accept the taste? They are all real healthy, so is it really needed. It seems they might drink less water, with the taste changed? Thanks for any input.
Got home from work ~1230 this afternoon, usually there are 2-3 eggs: generally 2 white eggs & a brown or green.
Today, only 1 (white) egg, and I found a partial eggshell in their free-range area (It was a white eggshell).
Could there be any other explanation than an egg-eating pullet? 2...
It seems to me that ants are disappearing soon after I first notice them, out in my yard. I am attributing this wonderful development to my 6 hens. Am I justified in this assumption?
I finally saw a kids dispenser at the grocery store, & came home with a bright plastic two-color egg. I haven't seen any more natural looking, to tell the truth.
If golf balls work, then garish colored plastic will, too - right ???
Just wondering, because a couple of their poops are surrounded by clear water (not diarrhea - I'm a nurse & know the difference)
We don't talk about their kidney function much
I have 6 pullets, 23 weeks old. They are all laying, except one of my 2 EEs, Coco.
Since she is definitely at the bottom of the pecking order, I was wondering if that could affect her egg-laying?
I think it is so sad that someone has to be on the bottom
Here is Trixie, who laid my very 1st little brown egg on July 26. Since then, she has laid an egg almost every day, & they are almost regular size now
Next came Daisy, who had me stumped while she got her dyeworks running smoothly (with bright yellow streaks & various shades of cream), but...
They both are almost 22 weeks old, with light-lime-green ears
This picture just gives an idea of the color; anyhow they are clearly NOT red!
Now Sunny has always been smaller & graceful looking
About a month ago
and today
Whereas Daisy, although she has the same colored (light lime...
Daisy herself is very white & everyone I have shown the eggs to, can not tell if they are white, or very light brown.
The egg I just collected I know she laid, & is definitely light brown. I know it is hers, because I heard someone doing the egg song, & rushed out to check the next box. The...
I was out this morning with bare legs, feeding & watering my small flock of 6 hens. Daisy, the larger white leghorn, made a few feints at my leg as if wondering if it would taste good, then took a nip. Luckily she didn't break skin, but it was unpleasant for me. Does she think I'm lower in the...
I'm new to having chickens, & have had my 6 hens ~3 months. The coop I built is large enough for sleeping & laying eggs, but if they had to stay inside on a rainy day, they couldn't move around that much. Their run is not covered, & they free-range in my back yard most of the day.
What do I...
