    hot peppers in feed

I need to find a way to keep my beagles from eating the chicken feed. I was wondering about putting hot pepper powder or crushed red pepper in the feed. I know other birds like to eat hot stuff but not sure about chickens.

my little wild banty is going broody.

They started laying this month (my 2 hens). The little banty was captured and giving to me and was rather wild. she is an egg laying machine though! Both my girls lay good eggs, I didn't think the banty eggs would be practical but they are very nice eggs! You get a better yolk ratio, and the...

designing new coop - wire mesh floor?

I am wondering if this would be a good thing in part of my coop. It doesn't get very cold here, mine stayed on the roost the coldest nights, I manually put them in the coop a couple times. It rarely gets under 30 but this winter we had a few low 20 days. But it gets very hot in the summer. I am...

I got my new chicks! Chickens are hard to photograph!

Out of the "flock" I attempted last year I got one dark brahma hen and one bantum hen of some sort. I can have 5 hens. The other day I picked up 3 chicks from the feed store, 3 jersey giants and 3 black sex links!!!!!111111eleventy!! They are so cute! One doesn't match, it's larger and has...

welp I did it. I culled my beautiful roosters.

It must be nice to live where you can have a real flock and a pretty rooster to service them. I can't so I had to cull my 3 dark brahmas. I will go so far to say they would have been the most beautiful roosters in the world had they been able to live longer. I'm going to make a cassarole with...

    should my doggies watch?

The time has come to cull my 3 roosters. My doggies can be trusted around my chickens so I don't want them to see us do the deed. My plan is to put them in a pet crate, after dark, and do it at the neighbors. I'm just going to skin them, I figured it would be easier than boiling water at the...

keeping some wild bantams, what to expect

I currently have 4 dark brahmas, 1 hen and 3 roos, and 3 wild bantams, 1 hen and 2 roos. I got the brahmas first, they are around 4 months old if I had to guess. Someone gave me the banties, they were wild and hung out in trees. Don't know anything about them except they are not full grown. The...

pic of brahma hen .. .

. . . next to a standard hen. I would like to see one as i have brahams and am wondering how big they will get. They are like lumbering fluffy bedroom slippers as it is. I only have one hen though, 3 cockerals. Oh well, I will enjoy them as long as I can. I want to get more brahmas when I...

new bantems and older dark brahmas

I have 4 dark brahmas, 1 hen and 3 roos. I got them when they were about a month old (I think the hen might have been older) and now they are about 4 months old. Age is approximate. I can't have roos so I am trying to up my hen numbers before I have to get rid of the roos. A coworker brought...

    my chickens don't roost.

It's very hot here so I can understand them not wanting to be in the coop but even when I provide places for them to roost, they prefer to pile up on teh ground. It's getting cooler here and they still pile on the ground! I have 4 dark brahmas, one pullet, 3 cockerals. I'm going to have to do...

    sand for run, have questions

My chickens are currently in this chicken tractor, when they aren't in the yard. Yeah I know, ha ha. It sounded like a good idea, just move the tractor and it will be easy to maintain. It can be moved, but I think I hurt my back doing it so I am going to make a kennel run and attach the...

making a hole in chain link

I got a 10x10 kennel run today at lowes to make a new more secure run for my girls. I am going to put hardware cloth around the bottom and make a apron, and cover it with wire as well. My first intentions was to put the coop on the chicken tractor inside the run. Now I would like to put it on...

    salmonella in eggs

I was not sure where to post this, hope it's not the wrong forum. Anyhoo, I work in the microbiology dept at work and we are getting a lot of stool cultures, probably because of the recent salmonella outbreak. Everyone that goes to the doctor with a stomach problem will probably have one...

Want to build a chicken moat.

I have seen very few pics though, most links just refer to the mother earth news article and drawing. Here is my garden plot as it is now. Or I should saw was a few months ago. It's pretty overgrown now. Bugs have eaten the squash and the tomatoes are withering vines, still loaded with tomatoes...

I didn't think it would happen so soon! RATS!

I think it was rats, not much else it could be. I just got my chickens yesterday, 5 little brahmas. They are at least a month old, I thought they would be safe in the chicken tractor. I checked on them several times thoughout the night and they seemed fine. About 5am my doggies ran out and...

    my chicken tractor

I am trying to design a pen for up to 5 hens in a large suburban backyard. I couldn't find a design exactly like I wanted, but a few came close. I wanted a square coop, with attached pen. I decided having it mounted on the wheels would make it easier to move, due to them creating sort of a...

    Hi from savannah!

I've been talking about getting chickens for over a year now, A couple weeks ago I finally started on my chicken tractor! I have a large suburban yard and my neighbors are on board so that's nice. I can have 5 hens, but I don't know if I will go for all five at first. I'm looking forward to...
