We built the new coop and the older girls and their roo have been moved in for about a week now. When we first moved them in we only put hay down in the nesting boxes and they used them with no problems, so my DH cleaned out the floor and then put hay on the floor for easier cleanup and the next...
We got our friend's hooked into chickens. It started with saving a friend from killing this roo because he didn't want to have more than one on the property, so I told them they should get some hens to keep him company. They decided to get 12 chicks. So, they didn't get the names of the breeds...
Well, I convinced my hubby that we needed more chickens, he said 6 for now. Went out and got them and then pointed out that the chicken tractor we currently have for our 4 current residents would be too small and maybe it was time to build a coop. So, he finally did since I can't move the...
I know I have an EE, instead of the Auracauna the feed store told me I have. But, I was wondering if EE's have coloration names like a pure breed and if so, what would this one be? I actually have another like her, only a little lighter in blue-grey color. Just wonderin'. Thanks!!
My 6 chicks are about 6 weeks old now and are running low on chick starter, so before I run out and get another 50 bag, I was wondering how much longer they need to be on it, if at all. I wouls rather get a smaller bag if they only need another week or two. Thanks!!
We were able to get 4 Auracanas and 2 Barred Rocks to add into our little backyard flock. They are so much fun and what a learning experience for my 2 1/2yo son. He was very careful and washed his hands directly afterwards. Just wanted to share them.
Hello, I was looking for about 6 1-day old or young chicks to buy. I wanted to get some Ameracaunas/EE or Black Australorps, but I am willing to buy other breeds for my flock. I am willing to pick up. I am in the tri-state area of New York. Thanks!
I hope I'm in the right spot. Never done this before.
I regretably have to re-home my lovely mutt roo, Feather Butt. I have raised him since he was 1 - 2 mos old. He is here with his brother and unfortunately the 2 of them can't come to an agreement as to who is top roo here. They are also...
I just wanted to share this pic I snapped of my DS feeding his chickies. He actually goes out to feed the birds, but the chickens have figured out that he has neat treats to give out. They see him and come running now. My son thinks it is the funniest thing. He loves the attention they give...
We will be getting our new babies in March and I was wondering how long does everyone keep them inside before introducing them to the flock. Thanks for any suggestions.
I was thinking of adding EE's to our flock for the egg colors. I was wondering if they are sold at most hatcheries or do you have to be lucky to come accross them in your area? My friends are making an order together, but I'm not sure which hatchery they are using. They are ordering RIR's and...
Hey everyone! I am looking at expanding my little flock this spring. I am getting in on an order with a few other people so it is easy to get 4 or 6 more of another breed. I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on which breed would be best. (I have a feeling y'all do ) I currently have 2...
Hi all
Just wanted to share in our excitement. Our two 4 month old roos started crowing this morning. Such a cute sound to hear their first crows. They do everything together so I guess it was inevitable that they would both try to crow together as well.
We have 17 week pullets starting to lay each day. Cute little eggs they are. Question is, when can you start eating their eggs? My DH's grandfather said he never ate pullet eggs until they were full sized. Just wondering what you guys thought. Thanks!!
My wonderful DH has done very well with the fact that I wanted chickens and now he likes not having to pay for eggs, so we decided to get a few Red Stars from the local feed store. They were 17 weeks old. We put them in the chicken tractor he had made for our other 3 chickens. He moves them...
My hen is sneezing lately and also sounds like there is fluid either in her lungs or in her throat, nose area. Is there anything that can be done and could something like this be contagious to the others? Could it be serious enough to kill her or could it just be a cold. It sounds like a...
Hi all,
I know the black and white one is a roo, but the brown one has us confused. He doesn't have any long tail feathers, but his head is red like a roo. We think he is a roo, but without the long feathers he looks like a hen. Please help. Thanks!
We think they are silkie X's. They are 5...
Hello all,
I have learned so much from all of you here and now I need your help. We are pretty new to chickens, having picked up our first 2 in Feb from the humane society.
My 10 week old hen (at least we're pretty sure she's a hen) isn't able to stand for too long on her own legs. She...
Hi all!
O.K. I added the pics. I hope it worked because it is my first time doing this.
Also, if you can tell the sex, we would appreciate it. Thanks!!
We just picked up 3 five week old chicks from a friend who hatched them for a class project and didn't want to keep them. She thinks...
I know this is a bit off of a chicken topic, but I needed some help and all of you are so knowledgeable about things, so I thought I'd give it a shot.
We have an extraordinary hornet problem in the eaves and under the roof of our house. I have been killing at least 2 bees a day in the house...
