    Peppermint?

A little off topic, but while my chickens also devour our peppermint, they completely ignore our mountain mint, despite it being right in the run next to the coop. It's not a true mint, although it smells fairly minty. It has a round, woody stem and can get to be a few feet tall.

    chicken poop neutralizers

I would top dress with well-finished compost to encourage any remaining poop to breakdown and help prevent all that nitrogen from burning the roots of whatever lawn you have left. Definitely no fertilizer, you'll only make things worse. Set your mower setting as high as possible this summer so...

Safe to eat eggs from hen eating medicated chick starter?

Until about 8 weeks ago I had just one lone barred rock hen who despite being at least 10 months old has only laid a few times and not at all since December. So when our chicks got old enough to move out to the big coop and there were no signs flock integration troubles I wasn't worried if she...

    parakeet grit with calcium okay?

Our six chicks are a little more than a month old now, and my wife and son are dying to give them some treats other than chick starter. I know if we do give them occasional treats they will also need grit, since it is too cold to get them outside yet. Several other posts here have mentioned that...

Is my sex linked pullet chick actually a cockerel?

First time raising chicks. We drove to a nearby hatchery and picked out three day-old pullet chicks from the brooder marked Gold Sex Link and three three-day old RIRs. The RIRs showed a lot of variation in color and feathering even that early on, but the GSLs were basically identical. But over...

    Kentucky people

There is an article up on Kentucky.com about the folks who are trying to get an ordinance allowing backyard chickens passed in Berea. If you have a chance, add some supportive comments below the article so we can help dispel some of the negative comments others have already made. ~jim

How long to feed Medicated feed

I almost bought the same stuff at TSC. It was in a small bag next to what i assumed were some other premium breeds for show chickens. But, around the corner in the next aisle I also found the 50lb bags of medicated chick feed, and it was only a couple of dollars more than the same size bag of...

    Reduce wasted feed?

This is my first time brooding chicks. We picked up 6 3-day olds from a local hatchery and they are doing great. Unfortunately, we seem to be going through a lot of feed. We have one of those round galvanized metal feeders that attaches to a quart jar. I'm refilling basically every day, but it...

Keeping chicks warm on the ride home

We just picked up six chicks from a small hatchery about an hour away yesterday. They were fine with the car ride. We put them in a small, short box so with the lid loosely closed the heat mostly stayed in. Or at least it would have if my wife, who was holding them in her lap wasn't giving my a...

Not a fan of home depot anymore...

I have the privilege of getting to work with a lot of antique and salvaged lumber anywhere from 5 to 150 years old and I can confidently tell you they just don't grow trees like they used too!. Even 2x4s from the 80s are noticeably straighter, with tighter, clearer grain than anything you could...

    Cleaning Solution

About three tablespoons to the gallon will give you a mixture slightly stronger than 1:100. This is the strength recommended by the CDC as a general disinfectant for surfaces. A scant two cups to the gallon will give you a sock-knocking 1:10 solution strong enough for even the most vile...

    chickens and power tools

My coop is about 100' feet from one of the busiest freight train lines in the state. Close to 30 loaded down coal trains rumble by every day. Even worse, there's a crossing about a 1/4 mile away, so all of the north bound trains also blow their horns as they pass by. I think it took the chickens...

    Coop with a second floor?

I live in the city with a small yard. I have a small (100ish square foot) run and a very small coop for four hens. I also let them out into our fenced yard on the weekends and summer evenings. I've been thinking that if I relocated my coop to the other end of the run that it would be easier...

    Hard #'s on your waterer

I was pretty nervous about the energy efficiency of my cookie-tin heat, after all making light isn't really the best way to make heat, but as i posted in the other thread, in my small coop with a 1 gallon plastic heater and just a 10 watt light bulb I wasn't icing over until we got down into the...

    Kentucky people

-wood&feathers. Yep, I'm just a block or so from Southland Dr, but I usually use Good Foods as a point of reference since out fair number of out-of-towners seem to shop there. I'm also pretty close to campus and Central Baptist. But, sadly no, we're well inside the Urban Services boundary, and...

    Cookie Tin water heater

For the first time since I built my cookie tin heater I had a little slush in it in the morning. 1 gallon plastic waterer, 7 degrees outside, 10 watt light bulb!.

    Kentucky people

Greetings Kentucky people ! I've been reading this forum for about 6 months now, the three before we got our chickens and the three since. Thanks to everyone for their good ideas and advice, even if you didn't know I was reading it. Hope everyone is staying warm. Anyways, I was wondering if...

UPDATE (good news): Small Puncture wound, air escaping

It is tough to see the hole, but it is under that torn bit of muscle almost in the center of the wound. I don't think it is to her lungs, since the "gasp" is so rare. It seems like it happens when she tries to make a coo or puff up her feathers. I've been reading here mostly on wound care, and...

UPDATE (good news): Small Puncture wound, air escaping

Somehow after three months in their new coop/run my wing-clipped Barred Rock got over a 6' fence and was attacked by a dog before my wife could rescue her. Remarkably, she seems to be in pretty good spirits, and unfortunately even managed to lay her first egg. She has lost about a 3 inch square...

    Good brown egg laying chicken

I've got to defend my West Virginia friends here just a little bit. It's not exactly Florida. If you're in the highlands region it can get pretty darn cold in WV. By my maps, the mountains of WV are in zone 5a-b. That's not Minnesota cold, but at least as cold as most of Michigan, the southern...
