Thank God I found your website!!!!! My husband and I decided to have a go at raising some chickens, for a couple of reasons: 1. Great experience for our two young children (Justin - 7 and Payton - 5) and 2. We eat A LOT of eggs! I used to have chickens when I was a young kid, but couldn't...

I think I have an egg eater suggestions please help!!

Thanks for the ideas. I have 12 layers and I haven't gotten an egg from them in days...all broken or eaten. I want to discourage this behavior now since I have 12 babies that will be laying around October. I'll let you know if this actually works.

    Today was Chick day!!!!!!

I must be crazy!!!!! We just put 12 eggs in the incubator on the 17th, but couldn't wait the 21 days for new chicks. So we went to the local feed store today and got 8 more chicks. Oh yeah, did I mention that we don't have room for 8 more chicks and whatever we are able to hatch. I know what...

    New at Hatching....have a question

I am very new at this. We have a still air incubator and are going to try to hatch some of our own eggs. My question is, how long can you collect eggs for before putting them into the incubator? Do they need to stay at room temperature? Sorry if this is a repetative question, but did a...

Thanks - I really needed the laugh! I actually have a dark, long haired, gray cat (he's huge) that sleeps that way all the time.

    Amberlinks- photos & video

I have 2 DeKalb Amberlinks that are about 20 weeks old. They have just started to lay (last week or so) and the eggs are very tiny. Will they get to be a normal sized egg? By the way....I love them too. They are so friendly and love attention.

    Help! Pullet in trouble?

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I had a similar incident with one of my birds last summer. For three days straight she only laid soft shelled eggs. I increased the amount of oyster shells that the birds had and provided a double amount of fresh water each day. Went away on its own...not even...

    My Coop

Nice job for a beginner carpenter. I have to agree with Scott....the ramp looks very steep and you will need a roost. In my experience, if you don't provide a roost, they will use the nesting boxes and they can get a bit messy with poop!

Lethargic hen, won't eat, just laying around -update- Red is gone

I don't honestly think that holding the chicken could have made her sick. However, I really would like the BYC people to continue this thread because I am now currently having the exact same problem with one of my 14 week old Buff Orpingtons. Anyone have anymore suggestions? Please....she is...

Heating a coop in the winter?

And it didn't look bad. Kind of like washable wallpaper. Wish I had thought of it.

Heating a coop in the winter?

Just a thought instead of paneling.....my neighbor used linoleum (spelling?). Got scrap pieces (5x10) for $15.00 each and nailed them to the walls. She said that is also helps with cleaning. IDK!

Heating a coop in the winter?

I live in New England, where the weather can get quite cold, but not as cols as Canada. My coop is not insulated, but I was able to provide a heat lamp for the chickens to stay warm. However, a local farmer was telling me that as long as the drafts are eliminated and you provide a perch for...
