Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Congrats on the chick! and thank you. I'm assuming it was a raccoon or a possum. The eggs were only under her for about 24 hours so I'm just going to put them in another nesting box and hope another hen goes broody. Think that would be okay? Since they probably didn't have time to really take...

So mad, something chewed through my coop and killed my broody and ate most of her eggs.

Okay I have an unusual question. Noira (BA) has 12 eggs under her, she is notorious for breaking and eating eggs, but I'd thought I'd try it again. Tonight I went out to check on her and the eggs. She still had all 12 eggs under her all still marked, but it appears to be wet in her nesting...

Well I'm trying to hatch under Noira again, she's been consistently broody all season (lay a few eggs, sit for a month, rinse repeat LOL). She's sitting on 12 mixed breed eggs today, due August 7th.

They are due in two days and they have a large air sack. Hmmm, I'd love to have more chicks, but I'm having trouble finding them close by. My BA seems very happy to be taking in chicks from others, but I might put one of the duck eggs under her just to be sure. Thanks everyone.

The ducks are under the broody. I think they are dead as well I didn't see any movement.

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Well it's official all the chicken eggs are duds, most didn't make it past week two, one pipped but didn't hatch and the rest were eaten or broken :(. I have three duck eggs which appear to still be alive and are due in two days. I feel so bad for my girls, one has adopted my banties chicks...

Well I took Noira's eggs away and gave her wooden ones. So at night she's been cuddling with my Bantam's chicks since she's left them. Sunshine has broken and eaten two eggs since yesterday :(

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Well part of them are in lock down and I didn't know if I could move them during that time. Also my girls are really picky and everytime I've moved them to clean they've gotten irritated and it's taken some strong arming to get them back into the nest. If I clean them what can I clean them with...

Eeeekkk more broken eggs, no hatches and this time I saw maggots. This seems disasterous. Will my other eggs hatch now or is it just over? I cleaned the nests after each broken egg but it didn't help. Now what to do, eggs are due 17-21st of this month.

I wouldn't, I would just work and clean around the nest.

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I gave my Dutch bantam six chicks (2 week and half olds and 4 dayish olds) mid day with no problems from her. Even after a few days when one of my big girls killed all the chicks and took over the nest () I just scooped up the dead chicks in a dish, removed them and put new chicks in their place...

Oh my gosh the horrible smell, both of my broodies broke eggs last night/ this morning and the smell was so gross. I really wish these eggs would hatch already so I don't have to worry about them breaking or eating their eggs :(

Okay, the eggs are due in two days and in six days. I originally though that they were being crushed, but there was yolk on my BA's face when I went to check on them. She is one messy broody.

Normal for Broody to eat the eggs that didn't develop? My BA has went from over a dozen to about 11 eggs, every one she broke open didn't have any development that I could tell.

Okay it's getting down to crunch time, what would you do? I have 5 chicken eggs due 17th, 8 chicken eggs due the 21st and 6 duck eggs due the 24th. I have two broody hens, which option do you think will work best? A: Give Broody #1 all chicken eggs and Broody #2 all duck eggs B: Give...
