Ditto on the guess. It is interesting to guess at ag strains. I wish I had asked more of the right questions but their background is now irretrievable. So i call mine Appalachian games :-) given this area was settled by Irish and German, and due to topagraphy has remained fairly well isolated...
Wow, he is pretty. You know, you could tether him and he'd be quite happy there. Its hard to know what happened to him, he could have been kept to show as well and got loose and as you say, there ae wild chickens about...could have been fighting with them for awhile. Alot of things could have...
I hear that...mine are in the eight month range. Had to grab four...two will be kept as back up...two will not. I deluded myself thinking they were probably not true game...boy, did they show me. Several younger ones are still ok to free range. Still learning as I go.
How many stags in that group je? Or are you keeping them separate? I free range too, and have to lock up some of them. I just keep one stag who was dominent anyway with the hens that were with him.
I've seen a hawk dive at my broody hen and chicks, attack thwarted by the rooster leaping into the air. I've been told by the man who gave me my chickens that he's seen the broodies flying after hawks to chase them off. The games are so protective I believe it...after some steri strips needed...
No comb at all? Born that way or it could have gotten torn off. Maybe a pea comb or walnut. Alot of my hens have practically no comb, but very small peacomb....the stags though all have visible, even if pea.
Yeah, a quad of bbr would be hard to come by,especially good birds. You ought to try a breeder. Don't know that I'd buy expensive birds and free range them though, esp in the woods, that's where mine tend to disappear. Good luck on that. Sumatra do well free range.
I think they are great free rangers, unfortunately I have only one pair bbr. Have silver and golden duckwing. It was a bad summer for predators and want to keep my pullets so far....I live in the woods also. It a shame you can't find any where you are...I'd think they'd be popular in that...
Well it depends, why do you want gamefowl? If there aren't any in your area they may not be suited to it. They are independent sort and have special needs...not so great for a typical backyard. Jmo
Frizzles? Yeah, I didn't want to say anything, like, your chicken looks a little scruffy there, haha. Needs some conditioner. Or, you took him fishing and he was the bait.
I've been told any color leg is fine with ag. Some strains call for a certain color though. I prefer black or slate grey..I think they are stronger/tougher skin, with a tihter scale..jmo.
