Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Fish meal is one source, and about the only animal protein source I've seen routinely sold for feed purposes.

Pearson's Square makes it pretty easy: http://msucares.com/pubs/publications/p2632.html or there's always good old tedious algebra. ;)

I think you've come close to defining something I've been thinking about lately. We've been talking about years of experience, but I wonder how much "number of chickens" comes into play, too. Some things that might seem reasonable to someone who has 3 chickens might seem a bit silly to someone...

I think I remember that thread. I have to bite my tongue on pretty much any post where people get serious about ratios in general. But I do have some nice game cam pics of a coyote with a scale and a calculator...

You're not alone. But as long as the Sheriff and the insurance company bought it, he's good. "I went to town, and when I came back, the hawgs had done et her!"

And quick, simple answers to questions leads people to ignore in-depth learning. Instead of thinking "Hey, raising some chickens would be a good idea. Let me find out what that involves..." they go buy half-dozen chicks at TSC, then join BYC and post something like, "HAI GUIZ I HAVE BABY...

Somebody once pointed out that the good news about the Internet is that brilliant experts will answer your question, and the bad news is that everybody else will answer your question, too. ;)

I'm starting to think that "looking stuff up" is becoming a Forgotten Secret of the Old Ones! Maybe it's just me, but I grew up thinking that if there's nobody to teach you something, it's time for a trip to the library. Assuming that one doesn't have a grandmother, uncle, or whatever to learn...

That's something that cracks me up about the Purina label and ads (some of the others are just as bad). First they brag about how it's "FREE of all animal proteins and fats for healthy, happy birds. ", then they say it's "Enhanced with lysine and methionine to give birds the healthy nutrients...

I have, within reasonable driving distance, three feed stores about like you describe. That's not counting the hardware store about within walking distance that sells feed. ;) Alas, no true feed mill anywhere near, though.

So, the most important thing about breeding is eating a lot of chicken? Hey, even I can do that!

Well, if you want to be picky, humans and chickens are weird, too. I have to admit that chickens confuse me less, and annoy me less, than humans. And having raised four kids and spoiled two grandkids, I can tell ya chickens is cheaper!

I can't think of having goats as "weird", at least compared to: Owning land and not having a garden Having a garden and not having chickens Having chickens and not having a garden Poodles Apartment buildings I mean, that's all weird stuff!

Your biosecurity is APPALLING! But then, mine consists of taking off my boots when I come inside (if I remember) and washing my hands (if I remember). As far as eating -- when I'd finished the newest coop (my first real, walkin coop), at the first good rain we had, I made a drink and went out...

All that reminds me -- when, exactly, did people treating chicknsh-- er, droppings as if it were nuclear waste? I must be dumb, because it looks exactly like fertilizer to me.

Hmmm... maybe vinyl flooring with a layer of Sweet PDZ or DE? (btw -- in another thread, somebody recommended "food grade Sweet PDZ"...) I guess disposable diapers would only be good enough for hatchery birds.
