That's beautiful. My kids all made animal noises before speaking, so it sounds very promising & wishing you all the best. And the empathy all kids develop when spending time with animals is priceless.
Nice job on the processing, BTW. Good weights for the grow out period. Did you just raise the five this year or will you be doing more soon?
I hope your broody gets back into condition soon, Morrigan. I've heard to give them chick starter for a while to help facilitate that. Seems to be working...
Schipmom, my meatballs are from Sunnyside, too! Here they are a week ago with some barnyard mixes I hatched out last week & my daughter's little bunny.
You can only see a few, but there are about 60 chicks altogether.
Good job, Double Kindness!
Linda, I hope you'll frequent some of the threads we are on together over your season off. Have fun visiting your friend!
Ralphie, I'm just catching up on this thread - the last I checked was 23 days ago! But I hear you have toads and Bert's foot is all better. I'm...
Ralphie - you're killing me!
So these Bresse's you some of you are incubating and raising - is it a French dual purpose bird? And where do you guys get your stock from, local breeders? How do they dress out, etc.?
Jessica, what you & DH have done is wonderful.
I love seeing chickens being able to be chickens.
I am three weeks from delivering this baby. Looking forward to a nice glass of wine and a smoke. It's good to know I've found a thread that accepts drinking & posting about chickens!
DK - I used...
I look at the insides before deciding whether I'll eat any cull - rooster, layer or meatball. Sometimes a particular meatie seems to be having problems (and is having leg issues or has a weak heart) but the rest of the insides are fine - no tumors, aspires, a nice liver, etc. Sometimes an old...
Just checking in - I haven't even had time to thoroughly read the threads lately! But I love the busy-ness of spring.
Condolences to DK, Turkeytruff and Jessica. If I missed someone, my apologies. Old birds die, young birds have a certain mortality rate to expect, but it is still very sad when...
Sorry to hear about your CX not doing well, Double Kindness.
You can try isolating your bird, adding vitamins to the water, etc., and he or she may or may not get well. Sometimes I've done this and they perk up in a day or two and can be reintroduced. Sometimes they just don't make it. It...
You build them a little cave out of wire mesh or similar material, lay the heating pad over with maybe some hay all around and monitor the temp before setting the chicks in there. You would have feed and water outside of it so they go in & out of the cave like hen-raised chicks would, and they...
the news of the day is....(drum roll,,trumpet....etc)
I am making TOADS!!!
Toads not salamanders eh? excellent! Bert should be a very happy roo! Lucky Bert ;)
That's great news, Turkeytruff!!
And the heating pad thing is so cool, MM & TT! I have a large Sweeter Heater for brooding...
My males reach market weight before the females consistently. I have not noticed either gender foraging more or hanging at the feeder more, but I don't feed free choice, either. They all come running after anyone with a bucket with equal interest.
Now I will have to watch more closely to see...
