I would say it's normal for any new bird who has been taken out of her old environment. You don't mention if you have a flock of your own or if this bird will be integrating into your own flock. If so, and it might be too late already, you should isolate her for several weeks to avoid...

I got 20 black Java chicks in spring 2010. They are beautiful, resourceful birds. Friendly, curious..we love them. They mature quickly. Our cockerals dressed out at just over 4 lbs by five months of age. About 1/4 of them had pink/white feet instead of the bright yellow. If you'd like to see...

Success! Our Java broody hatched six eggs. The seventh was a dud. Here she is with part of her brood visible. If you have to have more cute, here's the link to the youtube video I just uploaded.

My black Javas are all from Duane Urch. We're getting them ready to show at the county fair next week and are looking forward to showing a broody hen with chicks. We've had an incredibly dedicated broody who has faithfully attended her clutch through this heat wave and should hatch on Saturday...

The Java chicks are bigger than, say, Welsummer chicks. But they aren't as big as my Cochin chicks. My Java chicks tend to feather out the fastest and are very independent.

Just thought I would let you know the results of my recent harvest. My one year old rooster was 6 lb 10 oz to start and dressed out at 5lbs 4 oz. A very nice carcass, we are making chow mein tomorrow.

Thanks! And I'm glad I could help. Our chicks are the same age, so we lucked out. As far as our experience with the breed, the Javas started laying first. We had one pullet that switched from pink to red combs and wattles at about 17 weeks. Within two weeks of that transformation, we got our...

Here are our four week old Black Java chicks. I took close-up photos of our pullet and cockerel for comparison sake. I hope this helps for those of you who are trying to figure out who is who. These chicks hatched together and so are the same age. Here is our pullet. Notice the smaller and...

My best guess is they're both female. I have five that hatched on 3/11 and I can just now figure out who is who. I'll upload some pictures tonight, because it's the contrast between the cockerels and pullets that helped me see who was who.

Does anyone know of a chart that shows how to count the number of points on a Java cockerel's comb? I don't know which points count and which don't, where to start and where to stop. Also, how long should the back be? My cockerels lack that nice flat table, for lack of a better word. They both...

I'm in Minnesota, and I've been getting eggs all winter. We have 16 hens, and there was only a two-week period in early February when we got just 4 - 6 eggs. Right now I'm getting 10 - 12. Egg size is generous, a close second behind our Australorps.

Quote: My Javas have yellow feet - not quite as gold as the picture above. I got these birds as day-old chicks from Duane Urch, who also breeds mottled Javas. I doubt that they would have been housed together, though. As chicks they had quite a bit of yellow in them, and as they fledged some...

Can we talk leg color? I know slate is preferred, but what exactly is "willow"? Is it a flaw or something one would want to use to eliminate a bird from the breeding program? And as long as we're at it... Eye color is dark brown. How dark is dark? Can someone post a photo of the ideal?

Look how hardy this breed is. My Java hen hatched out chicks on Thanksgiving weekend, and decided to take them outside for fresh air today. It's 20 degrees and she had them out for a full 30 minutes! \\\\

Mine continue to lay well with just a slight drop in production due to light. They took their time exploring what snow is all about, but now are out in the run every day. One hen went broody in November, so I gave her 5 Java eggs which hatched on Thanksgiving weekend. She's mothering the chicks...

Are you having any excessive broodiness? I have 16 hens that all started laying in late August, early September and now three of them are trying to sit. I let two go and gave them eggs to hatch but now another bird won't leave the nest box. I'm debating whether or not to break her or let her go...

Two of my Java hens are broody and will be hatching around Thanksgiving. I question their wisdom. Rearing chicks in late November seems foolish to me, but let's see how well they do. These Javas are 7 months old and have been laying since late August/early September. We have 5 developing under...

My 7 month old Java hen has gone broody for the first time. After a week of removing her eggs, we've decided to let her give it a go. We moved her into a broody box and gave her six java eggs to hatch. So far she's very determined. Hatching chicks in MN in November will certainly test her...
