It's surprising what they can overcome.
When I was a teenager we had a polish roo that as a youngster had it's leg ripped off by a raccoon. When my dad went out to give it 'mercy' he said it looked right in his eyes, got up on one leg and hopped off just as fast as the rest of the flock. He...
I have a friend who hatched a chick like that. She didn't have the heart to cull. She nursed it along and made a little chicken wheel chair with poop board. It became a very pampered house chicken and was doing really well for how twisted it's spine and leg were. The hen lived for about a year...
So I'll probably post this other places if the chick gets worse but I figured I'd start brainstorming here.
One of the chicks I got today has a large bulge on one side of its chest, there is a small scab in the center. I'm worried its infection, but the chick is very active and is eating and...
So I kept the membrane moist every 2 hrs. Until 1am when I decided both that I had to sleep and that the chick was in a good place.
This is what I woke up to
My daughter has named 'her' ladybug although my husband and I both think it will be a roo.
I think 'she' may have splayed legs so I'll...
I'm also thinking that the three chicks that piped but didn't make it failed because they piped in a funky air cell away from where they could reach the shell.
This has been quite the refresher course in incubation. I hope I do better during the September hatch
So I made a hole in the piped eggs and I'm glad I did! The membrane had collapsed around it and the chick was well on its way to being shrink wrapped. (Membrane was turning white in places) I upped humidity, put olive oil on the membrane and made a cap with another egg shell... how often do you...
So I drilled into the air cells of the ones I thought had died and confirmed it. 3 had internally piped but didn't go any further, another had its head on the wrong end. I have 1 egg that is cheeping at me and am wondering what I can do to prevent myself from losing this one too? The last hasn't...
So today is day 20. I had several rockers and one that was cheeping on Monday. Serama often hatch day 19 so I was kinda expecting something early. Yesterday I heard some cheeping in the morning then it stopped by the afternoon. I cheep at the eggs and tap, but nothing
So when I candled before lock down these 4 looked a lot more solid colored and what veining could be seen was dark red. Now the veins are quite a bit lighter, you can see more into the egg and I'm not seeing any movement. Think their done for or is there still any hope?
My last two are solid...
All the cute little chicks make me really want to have chickens again!
..................but I don't think its gonna happen this hatch. The peeping totally stopped and most stopped rocking. I got paranoid and just finished candling. On four eggs I'm seeing the veins very visibly recede, one of...
Aggggggghhhhhhhh..................................
The waiting is killing me!!!! Still nothing external. I hear a cheep every now and then so I try to cheep back...... It's so hard not to open up the incubator every hour just to check for eternal pips in places I can't see.
Thank you. I will post pic's if the hatch proceeds to external pips. The air cells on these are looking pretty F'*-ed up. So I think I'll need all the luck I can get.
Anyone have tips on assisting the hatch of really funky air cells? I candled yesterday morning and from what little I could...
Day 18. I have 4 rockers and I heard a few little cheeps so YaY for internal pips! Tomorrow is hatch day for the little Seramas. I also received my replacement eggs today and picked up an additional 12 bresse as well so another 3 weeks of pins and needles.
Getting antsy waiting for chicks to hatch, but I think I'm going to be feeling that for awhile. My replacement eggs get here Monday, and now my husband has caught the chicken bug and wants me to hatch out White Bresse as well. He found someone local with the birds, and now we waiting to see if...
