Calls can be kept in more sheltered cages up off the ground in winter. I'm also in Ohio. I used large rabbit hutches for mine.

My calls lived with my anconas. Just make sure the calls have hiding places the bigger ducks can't get into & they will be fine.

    I would lay them down.

I always hatch calls on their sides...and preferably under a broody. Bantam chickens are perfect call broodies.

Actually, calls do come in tri-color. It's just not a SOP recognized color. I had an adorable tri-color hen. She was white based with little dalmation spots of blue & chocolate. Her coloring was a result of crossing white & butterscotch.

My 2 ancona drakes had 8 hens to share & still occasionally tried for the call hens. Other than a few missing head feathers, the calls were fine. Like I said, after being grabbed a couple times, the girls learned to dodge the big drakes pretty quick.

Sometimes & possibly. My anconas shared a pen with the calls last year. I caught my ancona drakes trying to mate the call hens. Not sure they ever succeeded, but they tried. The danger would be in the drake squishing the hen or drowning her because she's so small. My girls got good at dodging...

Definitely found your problem. Quit messing with the pen, you'll get eggs within a week. The waterer being moved is their normal, so no big deal.

My calls started really late last year, like May or June. They didn't like my coop. Once I moved them they started laying.

They just don't taste hot like we do. They eat it for the warmth for their body.

Birds don't taste things the same way we do. They like spicy stuff when they are cold because it raises body temp. It helps warm them without so much energy being used. Think about how hot you feel after eating something spicy. It does the same to birds.

The cayanne is safe, but like corn, it creates extra body heat, so you don't want to give it when it's real hot out.

Check your feed for protien. Thinking Dumore is only about 16%. You can try switching to Flock Raiser at 18% or a gamebird feed with higher protein. I go for 18-20% for all of my layers, even chickens. If you are doing oyster shell on the side, you don't have to use a layer feed. Just go for...

First, check the pond. Second, do they get locked up at night? If so, what time do they go in & when do you let them back out? Does the night box have windows?

Need more info on your setup. Do they free range? Are they in a small pen? How much light do they get? Protein content of feed? Age of birds?
