It looks just like the other dun, in the window, if you place them side by side..same tones on their fluff and also on their wing feathers coming in. And the one in the window can't be blue - no blue parents. Here are two blue chicks although these were taken last year...I actually thought the...
mcrooke: I'm lousy at sexing Sumatra until they have male feathering in, although I am going to try to start feather sexing at hatch to see how accurate that is.
I have been trying very hard to capture the difference between the dun and black Sumatra chicks on camera now that I have both of...
One of the blue Sumatra cockerels showing how "game" he isn't ;) He has more or less grown up with most of these Phoenix, although he's a couple months older. Birds in photo are between 7 months (Sumatra) and 2-5 months (Phoenix)
Platinum is a bird with one copy of blue and one copy of dun. Jeremy has photos of his rooster that is a platinum. I used to think it was another term for khaki (homozygous dun).
Dun is referred to as chocolate sometimes - usually depends on the breed.
Jeremy, that's exactly what I plan to do with your cockerel if I get him. I have a nice line of blacks that I'll put him over, save the nicest dun or platinum chicks and cross them back to the black line to get the spurs, size, and feathers. I have a separate line of blue that I am saving just...
Jeremy, I tried hundreds of dollars of that ebay sellers khaki eggs. *If* you can get one to hatch, prepare to keep it in an ultra-sterile environment. Of all the eggs I bought, only a few made it to lockdown, only one hatched and it was a failure to thrive - wouldn't eat, hardly moved. That...
After lots of rain and mud, which my Sumatras seem to completely ignore, my black roos feathers are a bit slicked out. I took this photo of him last Sunday, and he does remind me of a pheasant with his feathers all sticky and dirty.
He is still completely unwilling to be handled, so for the...
Yes, but only three. Two should lay this spring and are in with the pictured rooster. The other is a fall hatch, so she'll probably be awhile still.
Here are the two - they came with the pictured rooster on my facebook profile as a trio:
My blue hatch from fall turned out to be all cockerels...I was sure there were two pullets...but no.
This is my favorite so far...his tail will come down more as it extends. These are all 5 months old, hatched August 23rd. I'll probably keep two of these cockerels, although likely only hatch...

Age is certainly something to consider, as is your weather. They may not lay as often, or at all, in the wintertime/colder weather. They also may tend to start laying later then production breeds.
Wow, those are some awesome bantam blues - well, they're all awesome but I love the feathers on those blues.
Does that golden have some light barring in his hackle and saddle, or is it the light? It's very pretty.

Haha.. Thanks. He looks shorter and stubbier than he is due to the grass around his feet, although he is still shorter legged than he should be (and he's a bit on the chubby side). I have a young blue cockerel that is looking really nice that I think I will probably use on the hens...
Of all the Sumatra I've seen, I prefer Schock's birds.
I had a very hard time finding acceptable stock when I decided I wanted to keep Sumatra. I ordered countless batches of eggs to hatch, and only ended up with six chicks, although they are looking decent. I happened to find a spring hatch...

My only mature Sumatra roo is very vocal. His crow is significantly different than the Phoenix roosters, which are all nearly identical, so it's very easy to pick him out. Every morning the roosters all have crowing competitions where they stand outside in full view of each other and...
Thanks folks
I wasn't aware the blues had so much variety. The questionable chick and another just like it hatched so much lighter than the middle chick that I thought they were splash...then I started seeing the feather difference and was perplexed.
I got the eggs from a self-identified show...
I think I may have a dun or two in the batch of chicks from shipped eggs. I only had 7 chicks out of 27 hatch, the khaki (of course) was a failure to thrive so I have 6 total chicks that are a few weeks old now.
I took him for a blue, but he has a completely different cast to his feathers...

I've been told this before.
If he is a boy he will have to be rehomed. Any idea what I should ask for him, or should I just put him on BidBird when the time comes and let the auctionees decide?
If it's a roo and you're willing to ship, we should talk. I'm not familiar with how to go...
Does anyone know if it's possible to find birds of Richard Schock's line? I really love his emphasis on feather along with type in the photos I've seen, but no idea how to find out if he's still breeding.
Also, I'm looking for a few good dun, khaki, or platinum sumatras (that aren't from the...
