Quercus21, sounds like a pretty day. We're expecting about 3 inches of rain. We have similar businesses -- just had never heard the term "gravel bank." Delivery charges would be quite expensive to my place.

Quercus, I don't know what you mean exactly. I will probably drive a pickup to a landscape place about an hour away and get some topsoil there this week, and get a little at a time until I get enough.

Good morning, y'all. I'm enjoying an extra-strong cup of coffee and chicory this morning while it rains. The dogwoods are blooming and the leaves should be out on all the trees in a matter of days now. I was in Tractor Supply yesterday to buy food and managed to avoid looking at chicks. I've...

Even though we've had temps near 80, it's still not officially safe for houseplants outside until mid April here, but I am gambling. Another 3/4 inch of rain last night -- muddier than ever. My experience with growing thyme and rosemary inside hasn't been good. It all depends on how much...

quercus21, ouch! I feel for you with knee pain. We got almost three inches of rain here last night, so it will be a bit too muddy to work outside for a while. I think I will be daring and bring most of my house plants and citrus trees outside tomorrow. I think I may give most of them...

rngrbill, nice! I'd like to have some of the silver-laced Wyandotts. AH-HA! I found one of the free-range nests! The great news is that my one and only Ameracauna hen is laying again, because there was a small blue egg in this group.

Karl, two things I love, tulips and lilacs -- and they won't grow here. For us it has seemed like a long winter, too. It's beautiful and sunny out again today. The daffodils, spirea, redbud trees, and quince are blooming, though. Apparently only one of my 7 hens is laying eggs in the nest...

Karl, I certainly hope you get the weekend off! And that's too bad about more snow. We've had some very warm days, but are about to cool off again this afternoon. I've been busy -- wish there were two of me. The chickens and dogs are fed and the chickens are out to free range. This...

It was beautiful and warmed up nicely yesterday, evern warmer today. I worked outside most of the day and plan to get back at it today, weeding beds, making a raised bed and hoping to scrounge enough soil to get some kale planted, albeit a little late. Have a great weekend, everyone.

Karl, it's me, Stumpy, that was talking about poodles. Grooming the standards is a big job, but in some ways easier than toy poodles. Getting in between the toes of toy poodles, for instance, is more tedious. The longer the hair, the more brushing and maintenance it takes. Hair grows...

    Coffee's ready...

Hi. If you are referring to my post about poodles, I have never owned a toy poodle; only standard and mini. The standard poodle is my favorite -- incredibly intelligent and fun.

oes, he's so cute. I owned poodles for about 25 years and did my own grooming. It can be a lot of work.

Whew! Isn't that the truth! We would probably have had snakes galore by then, too. A few had already reached that stage. I crawled around under there and put wire in places to try to stop the hens.

oes, it's good that you're taking in the rooster. I have two extras myself. karl, I don't know what to recommend to grow in your area. I have found valuable advice at Garden Web forums, though. There is a lot of good decaf coffee out there . I planted potatoes yesterday and found more...

quercus21, I'd love to get more egg layers this year, but DH strictly limits the number of my chickens. Today a close-to-record high of 80 is possible, with severe storms/possible tornadoes tonight. I hope it isn't going to be that bad.

Karl, While this is article is from Southern Living, it does discuss the difference between European and southern grapes. http://www.southernliving.com/home-garden/gardens/southern-plant-muscadines-00417000067199/

quercus1, beautiful pic. Are you trying concord grapes? They won't grow in our humid climate and clay soil. I don't know what to recommend for your area.

One of the things which really caught my eye at Hancock's was an egg wreath. It was so attractive, not really too "cutesy." It was actually an Easter thing, but I was thinking how great it would look inside a coop. The price kept me from indulging, though. They often have huge markdowns on...

karl, we usually don't have many days below 20 degrees. I am in Zone 8 -- may have mentioned that. The problem -- at least it seems to me -- is that we seem to go from winter to summer . My particular area only got one inch of snow, but there was a town a few counties away that got 10 inches...
