I had 21 project chicks hatch and have more hatching this week and next. This week I only have a handful of eggs but next week I have at least a dozen or so set to hatch. I will post pics as they grow.
I'd be happy to share if anyone wants some! I'll be breaking up the project flock in the next...
While I'm here I might as well post some of my new project chicks! This will be a repeat for those on the FB group...
I've been dying for black and mottled Orloffs but was never able to find anyone selling some, so I decided to make my own.
I bought a Java quad a month or so ago - a black roo...
I only have a couple of pics from the show. My favorite hen placed behind the ones I like less but maybe it was because her back is a little beat up.
This was only my second time showing (and last year I only brought two). This year I brought Orloffs, Javas, and Marans.
Junior - BB

Did we talk at the show in Augusta last weekend? I was the one with the Orloffs.
I have plenty of male chicks or I'd be interested in taking on your hen. I'd love to see pics if you have any.
I would give your chicks some time to grow. They change A LOT with their first molt and continue to change as they mature. I had a cockerel that had A LOT of white when he was young - now he has very little. And some get even more white...so just let them grow out. That probably doesn't help a...
Those could be speckled sussex chicks - their coloration is similar to Orloffs but they have a single comb and no beard/muffs.

Yep they are spangled. Their parents looked very similar when I got them.
I might try lowering my incubator temp a little, although the eggs are fairly small so maybe a day early is okay. But I did have 2 hatch that had open navels, one I am giving a chance to absorb it but the other there was...
Yes, I just had my first batch of chicks hatch today. It looks like I've ended up with 9. Not as many as I was hoping for, but a decent number! I'll leave the rest of the eggs in the bator for a few more days to see if there are any late bloomers...they technically weren't due until tomorrow so...
Yep that's him - my husband dubbed him Junior. I would consider shipping, but I'm not sure about what temperature ranges are safe, or how to go about it, how much it would cost. I can look into it though.
He's from Ideal, hatched last April or March. He has a couple of feather stubs on his feet...
Our heat index has been 100+ degrees for the past few days and the heat wave is supposed to continue through the weekend. So far my Orloffs seem to be tolerating the heat well. My adults are panting here and there but not excessively. My coop is nice and shady so I'm sure that helps. They do...
I like my Orloffs from Ideal, at least the ones I kept. I did order a bunch and only kept the best few. I had a couple with duckfeet, two with no beards, I think one or two with single combs and one with a pea comb. Then some just didn't have the type I was looking for. But I ended up with 4...
How does it work with showing LF orloffs, since they are not a recognized breed? Do they still give out awards/placings?
I just showed two of my chickens (not Orloffs) over the weekend, it was my first time. I would love to show my Orloffs in the future - but right now my girls are not in...
I actually don't mind my Orloffs from Ideal - although only about 25% were worth keeping. Two had no beards, and one had a pea comb. I think one or two might have had a straight comb - I forget though!
Out of 12-15 or so pullets I ended up with 4 girls that I kept. My best looking was killed...
I just had to share...my chicks from desertmarcy arrived this morning. They seem fine after their long trip from AZ!
(I did put extra Nutri-Drench in their water so it's not as dirty as it looks...LOL)
I'm so happy to finally get Orloffs from great lines!
Do you have any pics you can post so I can see what you mean? It's hard to visualize!
My guy came from Ideal...for a hatchery bird I am pretty happy with him. I know he's not perfect but there is a lot I like about him.
I have 4 roos running with my flock, they are all about 9-12 months old...
I don't have any great shots from the front, but here are two shots I got yesterday that might work. If not I can probably take some more tomorrow.
He is getting more white in his hackle feathers - it'll be interesting to see how he looks when he's fully mature.
I also...
