The question really is: How bad are they? Usually to get good foot feathering, most birds have some degree of vulture hocking. If it doesn't feel too hard or stand out too much, most judges let it go. It does make that foot feathering look much fuller as adults.

I think the lighter color is because the Mahogany gene is not there. It causes a darker red. This is a very common difference in hatchery stock color vs purebred color. A double dose of the gene gives the darkest, most desirable color. Sorry for the delay. Rudy

What exactly do you think about your bird? Is this just one bird from different poses? The last pic seems a little bigger than the others, but looking at the piece of plastic on the ground, its probably just camera angle. For a columbian, I would say you are on the right track. Type looks...

Winter's here. What do you do differently to get your Cochins ready for winter than for the rest of your birds?

Tom, you have beautiful birds Quote: First, I'll say it's tough to evaluate from photos. That said. The females are better than the male. From the photo, it looks like the male may have off colored shanks. Even from the distance in the photo (bottom photo of him by himself) you should...

Quote: You have to start somewhere, so I don't think your hens are too bad in general. A good rooster would help a lot. If you can find one, great. If not, start with what you have, hatch more from the best birds and cull hard. Sometimes you can't find what you want/need, so you have to go...

Quote: Well, if four hours is too long for you to wait, breeding chickens might not be your game Three weeks ago this thread was all but dead for about 1 month straight... They will need some work, but they are definitely not hatchery stock. Again, I'm not claiming to be an expert here, but...

Look for things that won't change with age to help if you have to get rid of some. Pick good head points, foot feathering, width of body and back, etc. Size and maturity will change, they will get fluffier, etc, but some of the most important things you can look for are always either there or...

Quote: Your hen looks similar in color to the 3 closest birds I have to lemon blue; all 3 are cockerels. I have 5 cockerels, but the other 2 are more buff (1 light and 1 dark) with blue accents. None of my hens look lemon blue: 2 black, 1 blue, and 1 brown-red (she may not be a true brown-red...

Quote: You have some very nice partridge rtroxel! Those dark roosters are gorgeous, and I like all of the hens. Do you ever sell any: eggs, chicks, or adults? Unrelated to partridge, but is it hard to get correct tails on large fowl cochins? Mine are still young (3 and 1/2 months), so they...

The Red that has been standardized in Cochins is not the same as RI red. It is the more bright, rusty color as opposed to the deep mahogany of the RIR. Partridge do carry, or at least I'm pretty sure that they do, the mahogany gene. That is, the darker strains do. See pics on my website for...

It is actually possible to get decent stock from a hatchery. With LF Reds, you aren't going to find nice ones anywhere. Tim Bowles had some acceptable Red Bantams for sale at Crossroads. My guess is that you could cross them on LF blacks or maybe Buff and have something in only a couple...

Is anyone interested in some LF Partridge? I have a few birds available for pick up at Crossroads. Email me if you are interested. Will try to get a few pictures and put them on my website. But the pics up there are the parent stock.

Is everyone coming out to Indiana in the next few weeks for Crossroads? It would be fun to meet you all! I will be showing a few Large Partridge Cochins! Are most of your birds going into a molt this time of year or are many already done molting? What sorts of things do you do to get them in...

I guess it is up to you, but I would probably not put anything down and just scrape it once or twice a week. I've seen people also put gravel down and then you can rake it clean but the water runs out and you don't get any mud or manure mess. To me, shavings would be an extra cost. Rudy
