Hi guys! After my last failure of an incubation, we decided we would go ahead and buy some day old chicks of a fairly local breeder.
But the thing is, they live about 20 minutes away and my dad was concerned about this:
Would the chicks be alright in a 22C car for 30 minutes on the ride home...
The power strip the incubator was plugged into lost power for up to 9 hours after the eggs were in there for 12 hours already; the incubator has been running on that strip for about 3 weeks already and it happened while I was asleep so I wasn't expecting this at all and don't know how long it...
So today is about 6 hours into day 17 of my first ever incubation for Coturnix quail (and in general!) I’ve been sitting around the incubator all day checking for pips and whistling to see if I could hear any response. Nothing!
But just now, as I was refilling the water in the incubator before...
I am new to BYC and this is the third time I've posted this, (hopefully in the right spot now), but I have some questions about quail color varieties. I am not THAT new to quail and I do have some basic quail color knowledge, (pharaoh being dominant, italian incomplete, things like that), but I...
Disclaimer: there are so so many of these. If you're interested in working with a specific gene, please google it along with "research" or "study" and chances are you will find way more information. If you find something great I missed, please post it!
Let me know if any links go down and if...

After a worrisome few months my rosters started to crow. Changes since my last post.
• I ditched solar lights after trying so many different types.
• i instead use an led shop light i got at goodwill and ran a long extension cable hooked up to a timer (4am-8am)
• i now added some layer...
My coturnix quail has been sick with coccidiosis, so she’s been quarantined and I’ve been treating everyone with Corid. She’s finally better but today she’s been making this weird noise at the other birds that she’s never made before. What could it mean?
I’m not sure what could be causing this but my female coturnix hen has been laying eggs without shells for about 3-4 days now. She has just started to additionally poop out blood. Under her cage (she’s in solitary within the flock- comparison pic of her waste with the flock’s in images) she has...
Is anyone out there??
I know this is a long shot but I'm on the West coast of Canada and having a really hard time finding coturnix quail for sale. I mean babys or full grown(preferably full grown) are hard to find since no one wants to give them up it seems.
Does anyone know of hatcheries or...
Hi,
My Coturnix quail have been laying since they were 6 weeks old (or so). They are now 14 months old and have been laying non stop, with artificial light in winter. I expected them to have stopped laying by now, but they haven't. When can I expect them to stop or slow down laying?
In other...
One of my girls just gave us this egg- this has never happened before, we were able to wash the red off. Should I be concerned? What can cause this? What should I do?
So a buddy of mine and I bought 30 quail eggs and popped them in an incubator. I haven't had birds in a long time and was a little desperate to rear up some chicks again. Long story short I was about to give up but decided to candle them one last time and one of them had development.
If...
My sweet Coturnix quail is suddenly limping on one foot. I examined it and found nothing abnormal except that one of the nails on her unused foot is backwards. It’s just the claw part, not the foot. I’m not sure if it was like that before, but she’s really pitiful right now and I’m not sure how...
Can you raise bobwhite and coturnix in the same pen? I have bobs now, but am thinking of adding the coturnix to the mix. Any advice would be of great help.
Thank you,
Brenda
Hello! I am raising coturnix quail for eggs and as pets. I currently have three quails, two females and a male (Pharoah, Texas A&M, and Tibetan/Red). I’m hoping to get an additional laying female to add to my flock, as the male tends to mate when anxious and it can stress the females (they’re...
Hi everyone,
I’ve had an outdoor coop of coturnyx quails for over a year now and they’ve been doing great. Everyone did well through the winter last year but I’ve downsized from 10 Quail down to 1 male and 3-4 females. All of them are laying and behaving well but I’ve got one that has a decent...
Hey everyone! Week old since my little buggers have hatched!
Chick 1-3 are all common brown quails :3
But, 2 are really cool looking!
1 is a common brown with white tipped wings o.O
1 is yellow with brown / black splotches.
Any pictures of what these future cuties will look like??
Today I noticed my sweet little pet has swollen ankles, looks like both hallux (thumbs) are broken also. I actually line most of the cage with newspaper and chopped grasses almost all of the time. Sad, but I feel the broken hallux are kind of inevitable for a species that lives on wire flooring...
