    Black Swans Nesting!

Hey guys and gals, Our pair of black Aussies began building a nest on their island a few days ago, today on my way past I noticed a large egg on the ground about 5ft away from the unfinished nest. I know the female can take a few weeks to lay a full clutch but the weather is forecasted to drop...

    Nest Boxes 101

Roosters crow but the hen delivers, eggs that is! Nest boxes sure can make our lives easier when it comes to collecting eggs. Egg hunting can be fun once a year at Easter time but who wants to go digging around on a daily basis in corners of the coop and bedding, outside under every bush, or...

    I'm So Excited!

My only Speckled Sussex named Sadie Thompson was hatched in January. She's always been a runaround sort of gal, very curious and constantly running back and forth to check out anything new. I thought that she would never lay an egg and so far I am right. I did notice, however, that recently...

Non-Broody Hen Sitting in Nest with Broody Hen all Day

Hey everyone! Long time, no see. In the past week or so, one of my hens has been broody (which is very typical of her), but weirdly enough, my other hen Joy who has never exhibited broody behavior has joined Cream in her nesting box. They share the nest day in and day out, and I can tell that...

    Forest Nest - what now?

one of my hens has been sneaking off to build a somewhat concealed nest in the forest near their protected coop & nesting area. Now she has close to a dozen eggs and is mostly staying on the nest. I would like to let her finish but I’m worried about nocturnal predators and snakes. What should I...

    A good chuckle

So I remodeled the inside of my coop including a smaller nesting area, as my hens only used 2 out of the 5 nest boxes I previously had in there. Today I hung their heat lamp and I was near the coop when I heard a lot of clucking and chitter chatter. I cracked the door open and there was my roo...

    My Girls are Getting Weird

My chickens are doing strange things. Someone slept in a nest box last night. That hasn't happened since chickhood! I also found 3 eggs UNDER the nesting boxes! That has NEVER occurred before either. I told my husband we need to take the legs off the nesting boxes and put them on the floor...

My first canaries - some basic questions

Hello. I live in a rural part of Chile, though I am not Chilean. I have a large aviary that I built for my pet peacock two years go. Since then my aviary has expanded, I acquired a few more birds, including a girl pea and some lovely chickens. Last week I was gifted a pair of canaries, both...

    Chicken Jumps on Heads

Hilariously, and adorably, my 6 week old chick likes to jump on people's head and just sit there. I'm assuming she thinks it's like a nest, since she's just a baby still I never thought about giving her a nesting box, but maybe I should? Does she want to practice nesting? She's a barred...

    A possibly sick chicken?!

Help! I have a chicken who was acting strange last night. She hasn’t started laying and is 6/7 months old. Around 5PM I noticed she was more on edge than usual, she was darting everywhere and her feathers seemed a little wet on her breast and under her chin and she just looked almost bewildered...

    Adjustable nesting boxes

It's not the size that's adjustable. I make individual sizes for my Dixie Rainbow, Barred Rock and Serama. It's the ventilation, temperature and privacy that is adjustable. Once a bird gets locked into setting on her eggs, I can remove the covering and let her get some air in the heat of the day...

    Peahen turkey cross... Peakey?!!

A few weeks back, a random peahen found our farm. No idea where she came from, but we are happy to have her. Anywho... She was quite smitten with my turkey. His name is Tom. Tom being a lonely man stepped out on his misses while she is sitting on her nest. Shame on Tom. Lol well now miss peahen...

    Nesting Boxes

How many nesting boxes should be adequate for five Hens? My current coop has 2. I ordered 4 hens but got a fifth. Looks like they are all going to make it. So wonder if I should add another neseting box to the coop?

6 PACK WASHABLE NESTING BOX PADS

Has anyone out there used these plastic nesting pads? We recently had a mile problem, in fact we are still working on getting it cleared up, but it's come a long ways. I'm trying to do something other than shavings because a couple of our hens sneeze from the dust and if I can find something...

    First duck hatch!

After two years with chickens and guineas, we added ducks and geese last year. We have 5 female Rouens, two males, and a breeding pair of French Toulouse geese. About a month ago, 4 of the five Rouens and our female goose went broody and they've been sitting consistently on their eggs since. I...

Best thing to keeps bugs out of nesting boxes

I was cleaning out the coops today and there were bugs in the nesting boxes. There were rollie pollies which was probably a sign I need to clean out more but what is the best thing to keep mites and lice out? Thanks!

    Nesting boxes now or later?

When I move my chicks into the coop do I need to have the nesting boxes already in there so they can get used to them(I'm pretty sure I read somewhere they need to be unusable until laying age, if so how do I go about doing that?), or can I add the nesting boxes later when they get to laying age?

    When to introduce nesting boxes?

When should I offer my girls nesting boxes? I have them blocked off for now until they learn to sleep on the roosts and not on the floor of the coop. Is that right? I don’t want to put them in too early but don’t want to be too late either! They are 8 weeks old now.

    Aggressive Embden Geese

Hi there We have 13 geese and they are in full laying mode. We started out with two nests, but one of them seems to have been abandoned and now they all want to use the other one. The main problem with this is that there seems to be one particular couple who guard this nest and won't let any of...

Peculiar nesting behavior! Do chicks present make other hens brood?

Blackey in the third nest box scratching and nestling. Blackey's second nest box I have 2 coops and the older smaller one has been converted to the outdoor brooder. During the day, I open the door and one of my hens realized she could get in there. Her only interest is her old best boxes...
