Is anyone able to sex my Speckled Sussex who is just over 3 months' old please? I thought cockerel, but surely by now it's Saddle & tail feathers and wattles & comb would be more developed...? But it's not a breed I'm familiar with, so would appreciate any Advice! :)
many thanks!
I recently left city life & corporate America after 20+ years and moved to rural southeast Missouri, to restart/rebuild the family farm where my dad grew up. I got my first chickens --4 Dominique hens and a Rooster--from Cackle Hatchery in June 2019. I thought I might expand the flock in 2020...
Hello, I have studied for years and been building my coop for almost as long. Though this year I finally finished the coop and committed to the speckled Sussex breed. I ordered 8 pullets and 7 straight run from cackle hatchery and received my chicks on april 7, 2020. Everything has been great...
I'm going to be getting five more chicks: an EE, a Green Queen (another type of EE), a Speckled Sussex and 2 Gold-Laced Wyandottes on the 25th of this month. I hope everything goes well, I'm kinda nervous for some reason 😅
Hi everyone, I'm looking to purchase 2-3 pullets to join my flock. I need a couple more chickens for the winter and my current flock is around 12 weeks old. I am looking for Buff Orpington, Speckled Sussex, Jersey Giant, or Wyandotte, but I'm not too picky as long as the breed will be friendly...
I got these two supposedly Speckled Sussex chicks. However, someone called the species into question due to the lack of speckling in the body. Do they look like Speckled Sussex? Can you tell if they are roos or pullets? Any insight is appreciated!

Can anyone give their thoughts on sex of this chicken? See pics.
The saddle feathers to me scream roo, but at the same time its comb and wattles are really underdeveloped for 13 weeks. I've got another confirmed roo that has a massive pink comb and big dangly wattles at this age (different breed...
I would love some advice for my sweet Jolene. She has seemed perfectly well, then on July 4th she didn’t go up in the coop. She was squawking at what sounded like a scared cry from all of the fireworks. I got her and put her in but she didn’t want to come out the next morning. I separated her...
Cinnamon, one of my speckled sussex babies, seemed odd when we brought her home.
The other three chicks would be running around, but Cinnamon just flopped over to sleep.
At first we just joked about her being lazy, but after a couple days I realized something was wrong with her. I checked and...
I have come to terms with having to give up this little one if it is a rooster, however, sometime he/she makes me think it is not. Your input is much appreciated for a first time chicken owner. Our city will not allow roosters so we are trying to find him a home before he gets too loud. Photos...
Hi BYC,
I'm in Austin, TX. We're moving unexpectedly, and I am so very sad to say that I have to re-home my mixed flock. The flock has seven 8-week-old pullets, one suspected 8-week-old roo (not sure of breed), and two older birds that are still laying, but coming to an end. I hand-raised all...
so, my baby Salami is the sweetest little thing. earlier someone helped identify her as a speckled sussex and i was thrilled to have a hen of that breed in the flock when something happened... she was laying on top of me while i was laying down. she stood up straight and chirped, and then curved...
Beyond Excited Right Now!!!!
we officially have our first egg!!!!!! Sadly we found it on the ground and not in the nesting boxes. Any suggestions on how to teach them to use the boxes? We already have the dummy eggs so I’m not sure what else can be done.
Still I’m BEYOND excited to how many...
Hi all, This isn't an emergency, but I'm posting in the hope that someone has experienced this and knows what it is. This started last Dec. One day Canela's ankles were swollen- next day another hen had similar swelling, Both went to a local vet who suspected osteopetrosis, and suggested...
My 3 speckled sussex chickens haven’t laid an egg since mid September. They had a mild molt in September but have long since grown their feathers back. I wormed them in October. Supported them nutritionally with extra protein during the molt. I feed them Purina organic l’arena pellets. They have...
