➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

I've never raised any quail. Is it pretty much like raising chicks?

Edited to add: I have adult quail. I've never raised babies.
Not really, Valleys can be a little more demanding, especially when young, up to about 3 weeks, then they seem to settle down and most of the problems disappear too!

Okay, thanks for the advice, both of you. I've raised all my babies with the EcoGlow, but most of them have been waterfowl. Probably the smallest were the Serama chicks, which are tiny, but not quite as small as baby quail. Hopefully, they'll be okay. I plan on putting them in a small Rubbermaid tub for now. I don't like using heat lamps, because of the fire hazard.

Do they usually eat on their own without any problems? Do I need to grind the starter or is that not necessary?

I have a little outdoor aviary to add them to when they're old enough. It only has a pair of Valleys and a pair of chukar right now.

12 more in the brooder today. I have a couple oddballs that I might have to put down.

This one is just flailing around on it's back. It seems the late Hatcher's always have problems.

I usually grind it for the first few days.

I'm thinking this hunched one is not wry neck.
Is this considered wry neck for quail?
i have never really considered it wry neck as mine never really improved with vitamins as “classic wry neck” should. IME it varies widely in severity of defect based on malposition in the egg and time elapsed to assisted hatch. I think it’s basically due to being “stuck” too long. I have had cases that only survived hours and cases that survived 3+weeks. my “problem child” right now is really severe in that his head is basically upside down most of the time. (i will get a pic tonight) but he is eating and moving around fine otherwise so I’m letting him continue until I see a need to do something different. Yours does not appear to be severe enough for concern right now. he could very well survive until time to separate the “keepers” from “dinner”

It's been 48 hours. Paddles (Ant #2) just had his bandages removed. One ankle is mostly fixed and he's standing on the right part of the foot. The other one is still rotated. He's walking around well and doesn't appear crippled by his deformity, so I'm not putting him down just yet. We'll see how he gets around as he grows. :fl

I just ended him.
He was starting to not be active and hanging his head even lower.

So two of the three I helped out were not meant to be.

If the 3rd on goes down hill I will never again help anything out.

Ever...no matter what.

What color is that? That dark head with the yellow on the face.

Do you have babies yet?:fl

I'm too lazy to grind it, so I just take a fine mesh colander and pour the regular crumbles into it and shake. The fine, chick sized powder and bits fall into the bowl underneath, and the larger, adult size ones can be poured back into my container.
