since they got the new barn up and running zack seems to have really good systems in place to stay on top of the shipping!! As I was going back through my records, I have actually set over 500 of their eggs this year (this batch included). i’ve only had a couple batches that had “unexpected” usps delays and my overall fertility rate has been around 70% with overall hatch rate being around 50%. I’ve found a couple here and there with cracks that I missed but only “rotten” egg was one of my own!! He offered to replace the eggs i lost during July incubator malfunction but I haven’t had room thanks to my auction addiction and “accidental” wins!! About the only thing I could do at this point to possibly improve my hatches would be to invest in a better quality incubator and better thermometers for calibration and monitoring. (1000-1500 vs my current 250 investment)I pulled some more rotten eggs from the incubator this morning(not exploded thank jesus)...can't imagine they'd be this rotten from the short time they've been incubating. I think I'm going to try myshire next time because they seem to ship fast and fresh
We all try to do the best we can do, Sara Beth. No one can do better than that. Don’t kick yourself. Live, learn & carry on growing & improving. The little guy that was struggling this morning was dead by the time I got home tonight. I’m kind worried his trial/failure in the brooder is what clinched it.
Trying to tell myself he was likely doomed anyway given how goofy his foot was. Hard to know I guess.![]()
Anyone have opinions on fall hatches? I live in CT so I’m kind of worried if I were to start a hatch in a few weeks the little guys would have a hard time moving from the brooder to a colder outdoor coop, but I’d love to sneak another hatch in before the year ends.
Hmm good to know... I’ll have to see if I have anything around to keep them extra cozy.I don't hatch eggs past August of any species to ensure enough time for them to grow out before winter. Cots can survive winter outside IF you keep them away from drafts with a well-bedded pen. I keep mine in a partially insulated pen inside the chicken coop. Gives them an extra few degrees of warmth. Make sure they're fully grown, not just fully feathered. They need to have finished growing to have even a shot at making it through winter. Of course, that applies less to a place like CT than it does here, where it gets bitterly cold for weeks.
I also bring them in when it goes more than a little bit below zero. At some point, thermodynamics simply takes over, no matter how much down they have or how much they huddle together. It was pretty touch and go for a while last winter, and I'm not sure they'd survive more than two or three years if left out every winter. I'm bringing mine indoors this year. It was almost too much for them. They lost weight, sat around all day with their feathers fluffed as much as possible, and one even developed this weird temporary paralysis of her leg. It went away in summer.
I used hay packed up the edges of the walls.Hmm good to know... I’ll have to see if I have anything around to keep them extra cozy.
I love “massive monday’s” I’m not even the least bit tempted to bid on lots of 240The MyShire auction page has a lot of 240 eggs of all colors available in case any of you want to "accidentally" win an auction.
I am free of temptation on this one, since my incubator holds a maximum of 48. (We need an emoji with a halo. We also need one with devil horns.)
Indications are that if I had quail racks, my incubator could hold 744 quail eggs. They make racks that allow the quail eggs to be stacked equaling a total of 1488 quail eggs. It is a good thing that I do not have a permit to have quail or I could be in a world of hurt.I love “massive monday’s” I’m not even the least bit tempted to bid on lots of 240.....worst thing I ever did was increase incubator capacity to hold 137
have incubator space....will fill!!!![]()
