➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

since they got the new barn up and running zack seems to have really good systems in place to stay on top of the shipping!! As I was going back through my records, I have actually set over 500 of their eggs this year (this batch included). i’ve only had a couple batches that had “unexpected” usps delays and my overall fertility rate has been around 70% with overall hatch rate being around 50%. I’ve found a couple here and there with cracks that I missed but only “rotten” egg was one of my own!! He offered to replace the eggs i lost during July incubator malfunction but I haven’t had room thanks to my auction addiction and “accidental” wins!! About the only thing I could do at this point to possibly improve my hatches would be to invest in a better quality incubator and better thermometers for calibration and monitoring. (1000-1500 vs my current 250 investment)
That's good to know. I wishhhh I had a hatchery close by so the eggs didn't have to suffer through shipping. I think the first batch I ordered got bonked by shipping. This batch thankfully just the few rotten dudes in the extras and very few clears(compared to the first)in the celadons. Is myshires website catalog up to date? I have no facebook for auctions :/

I used hay packed up the edges of the walls.
Do you think pinestraw+hay+oak leaves+dried grass clippings 8 inches thick would be sufficient for temps down to -5 c°?
Indications are that if I had quail racks, my incubator could hold 744 quail eggs. They make racks that allow the quail eggs to be stacked equaling a total of 1488 quail eggs. It is a good thing that I do not have a permit to have quail or I could be in a world of hurt.
That is a LOT of quail eggs!! I'm assuming its a cabinet incubator?

You need a permit for cots in Wyoming? That's nuts.

So the slow poke that has been pipped for two days finally hatched (with minimal help ). Hopefully his feet won’t be too messed up as that seems to be the theme with these stubborn hatchers.

Also, one of my last three unpipped eggs managed to pip and hatch out completely today. Day 20. Surprise! :ya

You could leave them outside in the wind in -5c weather and they'd be fine. They're good with short dips, too; it's the sustained temperatures below -20 that wear on them and cause fatalities.

Ok good. They have corrugated metal around the bottom of the aviary so I think that will provide enough wind break and when it snows it will hopefully help insulate also.

:thumbsup Good. Just keep them out of the wind, their walking surface dry, and they should be fine. Cots are incredibly sturdy for their size.

Celsius always makes everything sound so much colder than it is. :lau

With winter temps I’m always like OMG THAT IS THE COLDEST WEATHER EVER ON THE PLANET!! :th

And then with warmer weather when people are complaining about like 20, 30, 40 degrees I’m like..... ???? 30 degrees isn’t hot at all???? In fact that’s freezing?? :lau

It is a bit counterintuitive for us Fahrenheit people...
