As of yesterday, I'm up to 40 eggs in the incubator.
I'm done adding eggs though. We will have a staggered hatch up to 4 days apart now. I think that many of the initial batch will not develop because they were up to 9 days old when I set them, which is not impossible but I know the odds of developing drop off quickly after 7 days. Hopefully we get at least 20 quail out of this hatch. 30 would be awesome.
As for our recent hatch, they are coming along very well. We had 27 living quail chicks last time I posted about them. We lost 1 though the other day. They have already grown some wing feathers and started flying/fluttering straight up. Two got out of the brooder so I decided to cover it. I grabbed an old large window pane that I had in the garage and placed it over the brooder. This was a dumb idea.
One of them flew up at some point and hit the window pane, breaking it's neck.
i removed the window pane and now need to fashion a new brooder cover. I have some heavy vinyl window screen scraps. I think I'm just going to put together a wood frame and staple the screen to it with some slack in case they fly into it.
