➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

What do you guys use as calcium for your layers? Oyster flour?
I just started offering crushed oyster shell too but for a while all I did was chicken egg shells. I collect them in a jar for several days, microwave for a minute or two then smash with a wooden spoon. I haven’t offered quail shells because I’m a bit worried it will somehow encourage them to start eating their eggs. That might just be me though. :idunno

As long as you crush the shells for chickens, it’s believed the birds won’t recognize them as eggs. From all I’ve read here, it doesn’t sound like quail are smarter than chickens. I haven’t had any chickens eat eggs though some of my BBW turkeys figured out that those were good eatin’. They’re now in a pen by themselves.

be careful that oyster shell is powdery. I lost a bunch of birds to what I believe was impacted crop from the crushed oyster shell pieces being too large.

@Matieus27 Let me know when you set.

OK, great, how many eggs?
Great, let us know when!

I grind up egg shells in the coffee grinder. I do not bake them, just rinse them.
I will let you know i just ordered another set of eggs as well they are they ones that are supposed to be sexlinked from myshire farms so looks like im going to have a staggered hatch

today is day 18 and day 20 for my eggs. I removed 50 shells this morning after moving fluffies to the brooder. 1 DIS, 1 assist died in incubator, this morning assist malposition and probable cull, 1 severe splay, and some possible bad feet, 2 early brooder death so far.

Theyre homegrown eggs so its as many as i can collect. I think right now i have about 30. My plan right now is setting every wk from a diff pen each wk so i can see who is throwing what and build up my colored flocks. I have 16 color varieties but only one, two or three(at Most) hens of each color. By spring i want to have enough of each color to have them all breeding pure. Last week i couldnt set cuz i have some duck eggs due the day they wouldve hatched but other than that ive set every wk for a month now.

Some good news over here, yest i sold the Last of the wyandottes id hatched this year, made the total 65 birds sold this year.

:thWon’t the sillies know when to stop eating the stuff? The pieces aren’t super big but now I wonder if I should find a way to crush it more. That doesn’t sound like a fun job.
