I'm dying.
i had several hens get puffy eyes/infections etc around the time of the raccoon attacks.....is there any means of cat, raccoon, etc smacking or clawing at them through the wire?? we originally thought pecking injuries too until the slaughters. After finding blood smeared around the coop, I looked everyone over and didn't see anything. Today, one of the Jumbo hens has a large wound on her neck. Acting a little off. Wasn't able to get pictures before the sun went down and I'm sick also.
Do quail get abscesses? I'll help her tomorrow. Since it looks infected, the meat will be composted.
most quail cages are 24ā high so should be pretty safe at 36ā.......but can happen as quail can flush up to 10āI'm considering just buying a couple coturnix hens at the feed store instead of going through the trouble of hatching. I saw the feather sexing chart on the first page, is that ever inaccurate? Do hens ever have orange breasts or males white breasts with dark spots? I don't want any cocks.
I am thinking that my budgie flight will be a suitable home for two. It's 60" x 18" floor space (and 36" tall) and I am going to make a box with walls about 9 inches high out of coroplast panels to set the cage in so I can use wood shavings instead of newspapers at the bottom without them going all over the room.
Am I likely to run into issues with the birds flushing and hitting their heads with that height or are they pretty chill?
yes quail have crops and should be on right like other birdsAre quail's crops on the right?
Do quail have crops?

Some varieties of coturnix are feather sexable; others are not. The basic kind (called pharaoh, if I remember the name right, is one). Unfortunately you canāt tell the sex until the birds start getting in their grown-up plumage. Also, it might be difficult to find coturnix chicks from a feed store. Maybe they could special order them... You might be better served to look for a local fancier and try to purchase from them. A local poultry club may be able to help you find such a person.
@Serin .... @BReeder! is located in the chicago area and has feather-sexable birds......might be able to talk him into selling you a couple girls.....Iād hook you up but iām 6 hours southI'm considering just buying a couple coturnix hens at the feed store instead of going through the trouble of hatching. @Serin I do have feather sexable coturnix. They are Jumbo Browns. I would be happy to sell a few if you want them. I am in Plainfield. I am not sure where in Chicagoland you are located, but message me if you are interested.
Before you buy the birds can you take photos of them so we can help you sex them?I'm considering just buying a couple coturnix hens at the feed store instead of going through the trouble of hatching.
