➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Now I’m really confused because it says online Dumor is made by Purina? They just manufacture it specifically for Tractor Supply. So is Purina bad too???

Purina makes Dumor to TSC's specifications. Just because it is made by Purina does not mean anything. Purina makes both good and poor quality feeds even under their own brand. It is your responsibility to check the required information tag and know what your specific poultry needs.

Purina does make a 30% protein "Startena" that is appropriate for game birds, poults and keets.

Thank you for the info!! I really didn’t know that and now I feel bad if I’m accidentally hurting them or something. :( although now I’m confused because they seem to be doing well and growing, feathering, etc. fast? Maybe they wouldn’t necessarily show symptoms??

I can’t believe they’re allowed to do that. :( but then again I know it happens a lot with pet food too or they just spontaneously change the ingredients without telling anyone. No way that would be allowed in people food I don’t think?

So if this feed isn’t appropriate, what feed would be? Genuinely asking there so I know. Should I order some?? Or is it too late since they are already two weeks old (Well, most are, some are only a week and a half)???

I still have probably 1 3/4 or 1 1/2 bags of the stuff left (actually just bought the new one yesterday along with Flockraiser for the chickens) so this is disappointing as I hate to waste it. :(

But also don’t want to hurt them.
Any damage done to your quail has probably already happened. Switching feed at this time is not likely to do them much good.

The most common response from people that are feeding their poultry an inappropriate feed is "Thye are doing great on it," I f a person has never fed the proper feed, how would they know whether or not they are doing great?

I very often see people claiming that keets do fine on chick starter. Since they never see how keets are supposed to be growing, they have no idea that their adults were stunted and never reached their proper sizes and had shorter than expected life spans because they did not receive the proper starter feed.

In the case of quail, there life span is so short that other than the fact that they never reach their full potential it isn't as big a deal as with longer lived species.

Ah okay that makes sense. I did actually look into it beforehand and found this chart which said quail need at least 23% protein for the first month or so which the Dumor one was the only one I found that did. Doesn’t mention other nutrients though.

And yes, I looked into that one before I even got the quail and again just now but nobody near me sells that one which is why I got the Dumor because it was the only one I could find near me. I just looked online and some places have the Purina for a seemingly reasonable price, like $22, $24, etc. but then they want like $40, $60, $70 shipping for it or they want like $30 for a 10 lb bag. That’s just not feasible to pay $100 for one bag of food.

If there’s another comparable one available, I’ll look into it, but I couldn’t find one.

I mean, that makes sense, but I really don’t think they’re stunted or damaged or anything because they are huge and growing like weeds on it??? And feathered extremely fast. Maybe they would grow even faster on a different feed?? But they seem to be doing well on this one. If I ever hatch more I’ll try to look into a different feed for them, but I looked into it for a while before I even got them and nobody near me carries any game feed.

If you can find 5tttttyq we rè :yesss: it, this stuff actually works great! Apparently it is labeled for quail too :)

My store doesn’t carry “gamebird feed” per se but they do carry this. :)

Not all chick starters will work, most don’t, but that particular one happens to also be for quail and other species too :)
Yes this one is the one I used last time I had quail ,thanks

i cleaned the “bunny barn” coop out last night and moved the older cornish X chicks out.....I cleaned the shed brooder for the ducklings and chicks and I cleaned the living room brooder. DH took the ducklings to the koi pond and they were a hoot! the pekins actually dove to the bottom of the pond so he couldn’t get them out!! big difference from quick and quack that hated water until they were grown! One successful melanistic hatch yesterday....a second has been zipped since yesterday afternoon but has not hatched.....I have resisted “helping” because I will not risk the others like last time. i’m having a hard time getting the humidity above 50%......i changed the battery in the hygrometer and there’s plenty of water in there but membrane on zipper still looks dry. @007Sean ......the first mellie hatched from one of the brown eggs ......i will post a pic as soon as it’s out for gender confirmation
Female melanistic's will have a crescent shaped, white patch under their throat with white tips on wings. Males will have white underneath with white wing tips and sometimes will have white above their eyes.

based on that my first hatcher is definitely boy like i thought! I assisted 2nd but I think it was stuck too long so probably won’t make it. Button was harassing baby in the brooder so I threw him to the wolves in the sub-aviary and couldn’t believe how the older ringnecks protested his removal!! they just stopped cheeping
