➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Nutty & Kiki -are you having zero runts/dicky legs/other issues with your hatches?

I feel like I constantly have all these babies with issues, all from shipped eggs of different sources. Although it's not of my own doing, I still feel responsible :hit
I hope :fl:fl that with my own eggs I have zero issues.
I got anxious and popped the top on 2 late hatchers and they both had curly toe. Fixed now, but the worst one was runty. Still walks funny and has a curled toe.

These 19, I did not see any feet issues. But I left them in the incubator while at work for 8 hours. Interested to see what happens with the remaining 8. Hands off for 48 hours.

It pooped on me, and isn’t touching the wet feed yet. They all keep running through it like it’s a mud bath for their toes.
I covered three sides of the cage with a towel, and turned the cage so that the long side is towards the heat in case it didn’t like it’s sleeping spot.
I see nothing physical bothering it.
My dealer said some just like to be loud. She saw the video, and said I should chill.
I’m coming back if it continues too much longer.

We’re quiet... I hope for good.

There are always a few screamers initially, I wouldn't stress as long as it's not *constant*. Being shoved into the world is traumatic :idunno

I have one left in there with no urge to come out! No pip or anything, just kicks like mad when I poke it. Hurry up, baby! I want to shut down the incubator!

It's from the same pairing as the one that pipped and died, no live chicks from that pairing (yet; there's five more in the next batch). Learning lots about my birds from keeping the first batches 1:1 pairings :pop

It has been confirmed that my bumblefoot case is my BEST hen currently in terms of the size/quality of offspring and fertility rate of eggs. I am very glad she is responding to the antibiotics really well. All the spots are slowly going down, shedding the necrotic bits, and turning foot-colored again. Phew. :th And I've changed my feeding tactics in leui of being able to get my normal purina 30% startena (everywhere been out for weeks! nowhere can order!) - they're going on a mix of the purina 19% gamebird and alfalfa sprouts/black soldier fly larvae. I will take the lower protein/slower growth over feeding a higher protein meat bird feed and leaving them open to these vitamin deficiency problems.

oh and btw, i won another auction this morning and I have 60+ SSC eggs to be delivered next week!!
I also had someone interested in buying chicks....hubby saying I can’t sell any until he gets meat in the freezer!

That is how my first chick from this hatch died :hit I'm glad you caught that one. I am also feeling very lucky to have had so few issues with this hatch besides that. It's been all healthy babies or failures to hatch at all. Very distinctly the OPPOSITE of last hatch with my terrible hatch rate and horrific cyclops chick. Where you order your eggs from matters! :old

I'm so excited you have more on the way, I demand detailed pictures of all that hatch from that collection :wee

definitely detailed pics! i’ve gotten a couple ssc so far in my rare assortments. they are such cute chicks! i was actually surprised that eggs from that collection are relatively inexpensive too! $18 per 30. i saved a few bucks getting them in the auction as 60+ with shipping came to $45.
it looks as if I may have found my wedged chick just in time as it is already crying to go back to the brooder. but i’ve tried nearly everything so far! when i used heating pad, i had 1 get stuck between it and the walls of the tote....etc.....so frustrating. the plate seems safer, but i don’t like that i can’t see them to make sure each one is eating, drinking, pooping, and not getting trampled at the bottom of the pile!
