my original 7 are pharaoh that I ordered from purely poultry....4 roos/3 hens....now 14 weeks. My first myshire batch is almost 8 weeks so when everyone finally starts laying I should have a pretty good genetic mix to start! definitely going to be checking out those other sources though!!

Oh nice! You've already got more than I thought :D

I can't actually say how much variance I do or don't have :/ But I got some birds from a santa Rosa flock, some birds from Castro valley, some from up near here, and some from the two smallest quality breeders I could find on eBay.

I have actually specifically avoided Myshire *because* I noticed how many sales they made and I wanted to maximize my ability to trade for the future without homogenizing my flock :D I also haven't actually gotten birds from stellar, JMF, or KC either (although I'm sure most of mine came from all those places originally, and that last one might be about to change).

Plus, I know Myshire originally got stock from at *least* two sources that had been breeding long enough to have distinct lines, and probably all three of the others, so they started off as well as possible.

I think I know the answer to my question but are you @CoturnixComplex and @muddy75 keeping accurate records of who, where you get your eggs, birds from as well as records of the pairings you doing in y'alls breeding programs?

Oh heck yes! I do love my organizing of generally useless things :wee I have lists and spreadsheets and genetic makeup guess breakdowns and a system for color code banding that indicates bloodline mix.

My last two generations have been 100% unrelated (to my knowledge/from different sources) , and my flock is an intense mix of traits right now, but I have had the most satisfying feeling of hitting on pairings that just work this time and are producing really really attractive, fast growing, typey individuals. Those birds are going to start to be bred more heavily into certain branches of my flock.

:hit My brain exploded, and the dog ate it! :hit:hit
I don’t think my brain can take the genetic stuff. I feel like

ā€œI like that one, it’s pretty! I’m going to mate these pretty ones, and get more!ā€
Okay, I’m not that bad, but I’m not too far from it!

That is also a totally valid system :gig

i’m still in very early stages....nowhere near actual ā€œbreedingā€ program as I have yet to even see my first egg. and I currently keep all of my quail together (but because of age/color) I know the source of the different birds. Hubby actually laughed at me for even watching the videos on genetics today. the recommendation to vary my stock and breed for both size and color is intriguing however. with that being said, i looked at 15 jmf meatmaker, 15 jumbo recessive white, and 15 celadon from kc as next possible hatch. (also couldn’t resist possibly adding 24 chukar eggs)
