Oh boy.. It's getting weird in here

We've hatched turkeys & chickens inside, and never had any issue. Them ratbag Turkey's lived inside the house for months! But there's obviously something in quailies my body doesn't like, even with them all in the garage.

I dunno how I am going to to process my 2 little white girls, they are my favourite

Sorry for everyone disasters overnight. Them boys can be real buggers sometime it's easier to cull them when they are jerks!

Sounds like a busy spring hatching coming up!! It's amazing how early y'all can get eggs shipped. It's not like that at all Aus. I we are only at the beginning of fall and you cannot get fertile eggs of any sort anywhere.

I mean, you could try to keep just 2-3 of your favorites for eggs before you get rid of them all. It might make a huge difference in your reaction! I'm so sorry to hear you are having such trouble My partner is definitely a little allergic to the quail and he is a good sport about the sneezing. If it was anything like what you've described I think I would have to get rid of them too, and it would be heartbreaking.

Maybe rabbits will be better for *everyone's* allergies!

My girl is getting more perky, not less, and at least still drinking, so here's hoping I'll have to make a special little hot mash for her tonight, that sometimes gets them going. She's definitely out of shock and into "ow ow ow I hate my life". I'll take it!

When do your quail (coturnix) begin laying eggs?
My quail are 9 weeks old and have not laid an egg yet. We provide feed with about 27% protein. I am not supplementing light, but they are in a sunroom that gets plenty of light through the windows all day - mostly indirect sunlight since it's on the north side of our house. The temp is kept around 65-70 F. Thoughts?

My thought is that if you jinx me, I’m going to be very upset!!! The other quail in this line begin at six weeks. I have a few days to go. So they better lay, or I’m blaming you!

mine are 5,10,17 weeks and no eggs yet either. my though is that days just aren’t quite long enough yet?? hubby seems to think mine won’t lay because they aren’t in cages?? I don’t think that is a problem. I did have a male crowing today after we offed the cockerels.....wondering if the boys were causing stress on my quailies?

Well I got my first egg on day 52.
I've been getting one egg a day since so I have at least one early layer from my January 20th hatch.
No crows yet.
No added light.
No other layers.
I am checking often for eggs.

I'm all stocked on quick-clot and antibiotics of various forms, but didn't realize I had no spray and have never had a wound with this much surface area on a quail exposed before, only deep pecks that needed clotting but had low infection risk and I wanted to keep open. Would be unacceptable lack of oversight in horse days!

Hubby is searching for something acceptable locally now, otherwise might have to drive to a feed store in (one of the) valley(s).

Poor thing is totally disinterested in food and water right now but it also obviously just happened, the blood is still bright bright red. Hopefully by tonight she'll start to come around.

If she were mine I would keep some neosporin on it to keep the skin soft until the feathers come back in so it doesn’t scar and pull tight.

paypal is usually dead on sending payment notifications and tracking info to my email as soon as label is created. not that it really helped in my current situation.

Chickens need a certain number of sunlit hours to lay. I’m pretty sure that’s the same with quail... I’m gonna say 16 hrs... nope... I looked it up. It’s 14-15 hrs of light per day, and that’s the same for quail.

If yours are on the north side of your house, they’re getting even fewer daylight hours than your latitude allows. For all the Texans here, it’s likely they’ll never need to supplement light. Since you’re in Illinois, @BReeder! you’re still in short days. I supplement my chickens and I’ve been getting more eggs than I know what to do with since they matured around the beginning of this year. From what I hear, morning light is most important, but really, I’m not sure it matters that much. They do need the light, tho. Without it, they WILL NOT lay.

Casper! Still blind as ever. Hollers in alarm when I clean cages unless I chatter soothingly at him :3 Doesn't seem to know how to groom himself (or even be aware that he gets so dirty), but that's his only real practical handicap so far.

@Texas Kiki this guy is as close as I have gotten to a black quail (left). You can see how differently shaded he is from his brother (right) and the rest of his siblings.
