āž” Quail Hatch Along🄚

Happy Easter everyone.
I'm way behind.
I'll catch up tomorrow, just wanted to stop by real quick to say all of my babies are officially layers now.

I’ve got 13 cayuga ducklings hatching and counting. There are about 7 left and I don’t think any have died. I assumed she wouldn’t be able to hatch that many. So I wasn’t wore about pulling several.:th

They are so so cute but that’s a lot of ducklings. Momma doesn’t get too upset if I’m slow and I try to pet them. She hisses at me but allows it. And they are curious little boogers.

I commented about this in Easter HAL, but I think ya'll here would be interested.

Cautiously introduced a quail hen to freshly hatched chicks (one or two might really be hers) on Friday. She initially seemed to ignore the chicks, but let them hang out with her and even dig into her feathers. Wasn't sure if I'd let things go overnight on the off chance the hen decided she had enough.... but she warmed up to the chicks and loosened up her wings so they'd all (16 of them) would fit under. By Saturday night, she apparently had decided the chicks were her chicks and I needed to be warned about messing with them when I reached into the brooder bin, even though I was bringing water and food. I've been getting pecked on the hand, albeit being allowed to clean up the bedding, but so far (knock on wood lol), it looks like she'll be minding them for at least the next few days. I am trying to limit human interaction to just what's necessary, and giving small amounts of treats, as encouragement for her to continue, seeing as she's sparing me worrying over keeping the environment perfect.
