➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

This is my first batch of quail ever. I may keep a breeding group in a coop over winter. Haven't decided yet. The plan was to butcher all by fall. Plans change all the time around here.
My plans change a few times an hour some days.

I wonder if you could temporarily cover it in winter with plywood or similar... leaving windows cut from the siding sheets and hinged to open, leaving just the wire. I would cover the south side with those corrugated plastic-ish panels in white or clear. I put those on the south side of the cattle shed and I really like them. They let in the light to keep things sun-sanitized but they’re amazingly tough. Kind of pricey but I didn’t need many. They’re easy to put up and take down, using the same screw holes every time.

Just my unasked-for musings... forgive me for I cannot help myself. :lau:oops:

I could, but I'll have an empty coop by then. I have more than one and use one for brooding chicks. The snow gets rather monstrous in our yards because we live in town and it just collects, so I'll probably move flocks into two buildings and save myself from having too many paths to keep open. But again, that may change. I love to change my mind.

I just couldn't wait any longer—9 hours resting should be plenty, right?

Gonna be a little crowded at lockdown when I pop them down a level, but all 33 fit.

I say that is plenty of time.
I think I set my shipped eggs immediately after opening the package.

People have so many opinions of what ought to be done with/for shipped eggs. You just have to decide which seems most credible to you. I like the idea of letting the eggs warm to room temperature, setting them broad end up in the incubator (I put mine in a paper half-egg carton since my incubator doesn’t have egg cups/slots/holders), and not turning them for a day (or several) in order to give air cells a chance to stabilize.

(He's very off topic, just one picture, I swear I swear)

Introducing Mr. Blue Buns!

His ear doesn't like to stay up, and he is a freak for sweet potatoes. He is a goofball. He is only 6 1/2 lbs now but should reach a whopping 15 (and can't stay on wire very long, poor tubby dear).

The rabbit show was fun! No standard blue rex for sale tho :rant The minis were so flipping cute! I wanted to stuff my pockets full and sneak out.
