➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Another 2 Jumbos put down at 4 weeks. Laying on side and not walking. 22 Jumbos remain. Not sure what I'm doing wrong here. Looks like the flies, but these don't have bites around the eyes like the last time. I am seeing some of the Buffalo gnats. Well, one was bugging me and I couldn't get it. Another tiny jumbo acting funny. Not hopeful for that one either. Rapidly approaching 50% survival. 22 birds from 41 eggs.

B#3 at 6 weeks old and one is crowing. I thought the layer rooster was talking, but wrong direction. The wild colored one is male. The 2 white ones are still unknown. No one is bald. All 3 are roughly the same size. I wouldn't be surprised if all turned out to be boys.

30 eggs from B#1&2 to the incubator for September. September will be busy.

Happy Birthday Muddy! Glad you survived the desert!

Can you tell that the Jumbo males are getting red chests yet?

I bought some but ran out and have been stealing the kids’ sandbox sand.

The quail seem to like at least some dirt in it though so it is a little “fluffier”. I was trying to decide if I was being too yuppie by buying dirt. :lau

:lau i felt the same way especially buying the organic but thats what they need otherwise its got fertilizer in it

I buy dirt and don't see one problem with it.
I usually dump my dirt boxes back into my yard...into holes the dogs dug or the ruts the kids make with the four wheeler.

Yes! I use old shavings too in the lowest places :lau my landlord was here when the stupid tree fell and i showed him how i use the birds to build up the ground adding shavings and dirt and sand to all the pens and half of them being tractors so the birds get fresh grass too :)

I found evidence of quail mating, several clumps of foam. Not sure if I am grossed out or excited that fertility should be high.

Are you spraying for the bugs?

Give them better ventilation, give them a wire bottom / move them farther away from the wire and/or remove the manure more often. DON'T give them spoiled, infested, moldy or lower than 24% protein feed. If there's an insect infestation in your house or yard, the quail WILL try to eat whatever goes into their cage. So if you're using insecticide, they'll likely be eating that too. My birds are at 4 weeks too and all 74 of them all in good health and they're all over 170 grams. It's my first time doing it too. It's not hard folks, do your research before getting live birds / incubating eggs and don't be lazy.

You don't even have to read to do your research. There's literally hundreds of videos about caring for quail on Youtube. You'll probably watch at least half an hour of TV in a day, so instead of that, put together that same duration of videos about caring for quail into a playlist and watch the whole thing. By the end of it, you'll know ALL you need to know about caring for quail. Here's a good channel to start with: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCr5VfZrKot0jnmb2ssWm8pA
