Crowing
My TSC cages cost $27 each. I can't really make them for that. A 15' roll of cage wire is $30, plus hardware cloth for the bottom, cage clips, skin rips & cuts, anger management, etc. Yeah. I do reinforce them with zip ties though

You made a mess out of that bird. It looks like the damage in your case was to the inner thighs. Did the skin get stuck there? I just chop the head and wings, cut out the vent and glans, gut, and then pull skin from neck to feet. Never had this sort of thigh damage.
we were planning to build them but ran short on time and tolerable weather, so this was the answer. we just attached my “prototype” to the fence on a shelf made from scrap 2x4 and used a piece of metal roofing over the top to provide shade (shopping for corrugated plastic roofing for future ones)That's price for me. DIY is just so cheap. I could made another 8x3 ft cage for $35.
You aren't scared or rats or mice getting in the cages by not having them wrapped with hardware cloth? My TSC cages cost $27 each. I can't really make them for that. How many adult quail do you think you can keep in a cage this size?
Only one male per cage.
It looks fine to me.Was that meant to make me feel worse? Yes, there were issues. Stuck skin was an issue, but I was busy handling other issues too. I certainly won’t be so unprepared and distracted if I dare try again.
The question is if (aside from the eggs) there are intestines I missed.
I can tell you that in my 36x24 inch cages I won't put more than 5 adults in one.Not sure, I was thinking it was like 1 square foot per quail? Is that accurate? Or is it less than that? 1/2 sq ft? More than that? 2 sq ft? So for the 2x2 one it’d only be like 4 max? But even that might be crowded? That’s part of why I was thinking of going bigger. So like for the 36 x 30 (3x2.5) since it’s 7.5 sq ft, maybe 7 or even only 6 total? Am I at all close here or do I need to rethink everything? Ha
And yeah, I figured. But do you think having them in cages next to each other or stacked would cause them to freak out/cause problems too or is that okay?
supposedly 3 jumbo per sq foot but I personally would not permanently house them that way.Not sure, I was thinking it was like 1 square foot per quail? Is that accurate? Never been a problem here. They are in a secure coop. I do put hardware cloth over open windows of the coop. You aren't scared or rats or mice getting in the cages by not having them wrapped with hardware cloth?
