➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

So I ordered my first batch of hatching eggs for the spring. I went with Myshire’s feather sexable assortment. I’m hoping to set them the beginning of April to give me something to do as I recover from an upcoming surgery.

They seem to have some really fun colors. I'm eyeballing the snowies and the schofield silvers.

16 little quail babies one week old survived the frigid temperatures outside for the very first time last night. Scary and dark and all are fine.

Cute little buggers.
What does "frigid" mean in Houston? It was 14° here around 6 am this morning. That seemed kind of frigid, but no wind, so not too bad. It's 5:00-ish now, and 40°. :ya

Second hatch in a row, quail didn't begin hatching until day 19. Originally set 107 eggs, 97 fertile and as of last night I moved 20 to brooder and 5 new still hatching or still wet in hatching trays. For a temporary current hatch rate of 23% and 26% of fertile hatched. I'm expecting a whole lot more to be hatched when I get home from work in a couple of hours.

Frigid. You know, anything below 70°F. :lau Even wore a long sleeved shirt last week. ;)

Had 2 more casualties. Turns out the little buggers CAN slip between the bars on the cage. Down to 14 and no clue where the other 2 wandered off too. When I woke up yesterday, heard one calling in distress. Sure enough, walking around outside the cage. Stuck it back in and it jumped out again. OK, fears confirmed and got the 1/4" hardware cloth lined rabbit cage out and pressed into service. This is awkward.

Spraying for the gnats. The sticky fly tape is covered and still collecting more. Wind blows the gnats away but when the wind stops, they come out with a vengeance.
