My 3 quail come up to me now just like the chickens when I go in their aviary. I think it’s because I handled them constantly and sat on the floor with them. They definitely aren’t flighty or anything. When I brought them feed in the morning the white one came right up to me and was staring at me until I pet it. I didn’t think they’d be this mellow. I guess holding them daily a bunch of times per day really helps. You just have to understand what motivates them. Every animal out there has a full range of emotions. Understanding what triggers their instincts helps. Prey animals are afraid of being eaten. Don't move like a predator (which can be hard, because we are), and you'd be amazed at what you can get away with.
The skunks and I regularly got within a few feet of each other. One of them ran across my feet once. The first couple of encounters were a bit nerve wracking, but I stood still and calm and they just got used to me. We met mostly during my early morning walks.
