A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Our fence is about 7 foot tall. The turkeys are the only escape artists. I'd have to net the whole thing to keep them in. Not happening, it's a very large area.

It really doesn't bother me, just annoys me when they act like they don't know how to get back over and spend the day crying and pacing. Lol
Oh dont let those lil suckers fool you! They can fly.... high! Ours go over our four ft fence like it is nothin til they decide in the pen with their friends is better.

I have a bunch of poults I want to put out in a tractor and then when they (and their chicken “sibs”) get used to it, let them out into ShockorNot netting for chicks. So... just wondering what to expect and whether it will work at all. I don’t mind popping them back in. At present I can do it with one hand... prolly not gonna last. :p

We use the electric netting for our meat birds and they do fine. But they are not fliers.

I have the shock or not. ... at to 2-3 wks old I had one get their head stuck in the 3/4" chick net on the bottom. sometimes at that age they find a spot they can go under it if you have rough ground. Where 2 sections join together I overlap the poles so they can't squiggle through a gap. Year before last, I had issues with chicks jumping up to the line above the chick net and going through the larger holes.
Sometime the older ones get the 'zoomies' and fly around for no reason. Sometimes they end up on the wrong side. If there is a tree or structure near either side of the fence they will fly up on it. Of course they go down on the wrong side.
I have more issues with the 6' field fence that has wooden posts, they like to hop up on top of the posts.

R2elk...those babies are adorable! Did you give your hen some older ones yet?
The Blue Slate hen was trying not to tell me that she had another poult hatch. She did not start talking until I started to check under her. She hatched another Sweetgrass poult for a total of 6 out of 7 eggs. The last egg was rotten when I candled it later.

I swiped her last poult and used it to lead her into the coop where the others and the brooder is. The new poult is in the brooder and mama went in with the month old poults and was kept staying between me and the poults. I believe that she will adopt them. It will likely take her a few days to get them to accept her because of how old they are.

I have a question.....

Friend got two poults for pets. No other turkeys or chickens. She says they are both going to be toms. Can two toms live peacefully together with no hens? Add he says they are both really sweet. But they are young....
With just two, most likely. They's still have their snood pulling contests. I had six boys living in the bachelor pad and they did fine until I tried to introduce a couple new boys. That didn't go well at all.

I heard a hubbub and seen a bunch of poults looking through the shade cloth into another coop. ... between the cloth and a nest box. I was thinking of a chipmunk or similar. I found this

  • 10' away is a turkey hen due to hatch on the 13th.... This is what happens when you let them set their own eggs.

I tried giving it to 3 different broody chickens and none would take it. Hopefully it's mom will when others hatch. ... I am afraid to give it to her now because it will go on a walkabout again
