Anyone get migraines?

I've been getting migraines for 30 years...25 years ago they gave me glasses, a lot of good that did! I now take Maxalt 10 mg, it takes care of my migraines about 95% of the time...and yes they can come back, often the next day, but I'll take it again and it works, again! I've needed the ER about 3 times in my life, not an experience I wish upon anyone! Maxalt is a blocker, so not a narcotic, so you can be a functioning human being when you take it! Good luck...

I just had a migraine last Saturday and have had a headache since. I, too, feel your pain. Kids to tend to and a head you'd like to just take off and set somewhere until it doesn't hurt anymore.

Like SpottedCrow, since a car accident in '84 (I was 5 months pregnant with son #1) and my head hit the windshield (I remember seeing my hair hanging from the star, but the ER nurse still argued with me about that!), I've had headaches. Thankfully, I've only had one that drove me to seek emergent care. Until my hysterectomy 5 years ago, I had a headache 3 weeks of the month, not necessarily related to my cycles.

Now, I get stress headaches. I've taken so many meds over the years that it's almost hit and miss for treatment. Excedrine Migraine or Tension Headache is good. I will also alter ibuprofen, then acetaminophen 2 hours later, followed by ibuprofen again 2 hours after that. This method does help immensely to keep the pain controllable. But, you really gotta watch this because you will be 'hung-over' the next day, and just feel 'disconnected'.

At one time, Excedrine (I think) put out Migraine Ice patches. I'm not sure what the content was, but they were similar to band-aids. I was convinced God had sent a miracle down just for me. Ice is the wonder-healer for headaches. Anything cold, whether it be ice or a cold can/bottle of coke, applied to the area of pain.

The (headache) pain is caused by a constriction of the blood vessels (or so I was told once). The ice will slow the blood flow to those vessels therefore, decreasing the pressure, resulting in pain relief.

And so.........after all this, do some experimenting with different methods we've all mentioned and please share with us what works for you.

Edited to add that I really hope you feel better soon! and for spelling...

I've had migraines most of my life but just a year or so back they started getting really, really bad. I had a headache/migraine more often than not. Two a week and each lasting 1-3 days. Nausea/vomiting the whole thing. Ugh. Anything I took seemed to make it worse except for a generic version of Imetrix (sp) but that was giving me some bad side effects. I did quite a bit of research on the internet. Started watching what I ate ect.
My solution: A combo of watching for food triggers, and this is the biggy: Feverfew, Vitimin B2 and Magnesium. It took a bit to figure how much of each would work but I now get maybe one migraine every month or two and they only last one day and I am still functional during that day.

.
I take 1ea. of Vit. B2 @100mg & 1ea. Feverfew @380mg. three times a day and the Mag. tablet 1ea. @Morning and eve. I take an extra feverfew on days I feel a bit headachy or if I've eaten something that seems to be triggering that migrainial feeling. There is a warning on the feverfew to not take it if you are pregnant or nursing. Also, all feverfew is not created equal concerning potency etc.
I tell you, I feel like I have my life back! My marriage was really suffering from me feeling so bad so much. An added benny, fm my DH's point of view, is that I feel, to put it nicely, more "frisky"

There is a combo with the Mag./Vit. B2/Feverfew on the internet market but it's pretty pricey. I like buying all these separate so I have more control on how much of each I am getting. It takes a few months as your body adjusts but WoW, I sometimes forget how bad I used to feel. Take care & I hope you get some relief.

BC power is like goodys ,you find them in the same aisle as aspirin, only they are a power and by mixing them with a soda, they get into the blood stream faster, like putting a pill under your tongue, it goes directly into the blood stream. that's why a Dr will have you put a nitro pill for heart trouble under your tongue. Some race car driver advertises them on TV

Migraines are the absolute worse thing! I didn't have these until I had a hysterectomy (ovaries intact) in 1990. I would much rather put up with cramps, heavy bleeding, & anemia than to deal with migraines.

I take magnesium taurate & B-complex anyway, but when a headache comes on, I apply magnesium oil to my temple along with rosemary & peppermint oils on my forehead. At least I smell good! Tylenol Sinus along with a Coke or Dr. Pepper helps.

Other than falling hormone levels, my big triggers are weather changes, chocolate, & MSG.
Has anybody here tried Petadolex, made from the herb, Butterbur? It is supposed to be a preventative like FeverFew?

I just wanted to add that my mom used to get horribly debilitating migraines. I don't remember what she took for them or anything, except that she spent a lot of time passed out in her bed with them. She got them fairly frequently for years. Since the day she divorced my father-monster, she's not not had a single one.

Now, I'm certainly not advocating divorce as a migraine cure, just sharing a bit of her experience with them.

Thanks, hencackle. I think stressful would be a huge understatement. She lived with an abusive step-father and married my father thinking she was escaping the situation. Definitely a "from the frying pan INTO the fire" situation. Oh well, we all survived, and he's since met his maker and I'm sure has paid his dues in his own way.

Now, if we can find the magic pill to erase ALL headaches for eternity, we'd be great, huh?
