APRIL Hatch a long ......Anyone?

I still have one week before candle day for me. (I only candle one time at half time)

Kassandra, do you go back and check iffy eggs after that before lockdown?

(I love your NN's! A couple months ago my niece pleaded with me to get NN's for her since her mom won't let her have chickens. Sadly, I don't think they'd do too well in our winters!)

Believe it or not, Turkens (Naked Necks) are cold hardy!

I'm in NC & it's really dry right now. I was using a heater in the room but turned that off last night, so it didn't drop down as fast. It was very windy yesterday...pain in the butt trying to insulate the roof with all the wind! I'm thinking of moving to another room, but it's probably in the best place in the house- away from direct sunlight, drafts, etc.

Did Day 10 candling last night.  All of them look very similar and had movement except two.  They were both BO eggs and I have a harder time seeing into the brown eggs.  One had a weird dip in the air cell, and I did not see movement.  The other one just did not seem as developed as the others, and again, no movement.

I put them back in with the others...might look at them again in a few days?

I'm am a noviced egg candler, and that's an understatement!  But it sure felt like some of the eggs were past day 10...much darker than the numerous candling photos and videos I've spent an undisclosed time looking for/at.

The weight loss now ranges from 6% to 12%, where they "should" be around 7-9%.  Yeesh.  The 12% sticks out like a sore thumb now, the next highest loss is 9%.  It has a lively little chick in it, so we'll see.  I'm not adjusting the whole incubator for one egg.

Anyway, eight looked similar and had movement.  Yay!

My first time, I had a chick hatch day 19, & the last chick on day 23. I did have to open up the incubator a couple times to pull out the chicks that were ready for the brooder. I wish I tracked the weight though, that one that hatched at day 19 was all by itself for a whole 24 hrs. I also had to assist a hatch the first time. I was super nervous!! Lol

Edit: keep doing what you are doing, & go with your gut :)

Yay! Eggs in the bator as of late last night! 42 eggs. I marked all of our eggs so that we can tell the difference between ours and the neighbors cold eggs. Cant want to see if any are viable eggs.

I swore off any incubating for the year as I have too much going on, but 2 of my Kraienkoppe sisters have other plans. They both have insisted on being broody for weeks already. So I finally let them keep 2 eggs after they stole them from another nest, LOL! The two of them are sitting in one nest on 2 eggs. Very sweet actually :D Of all my hens, Ripley my one eyed Kraienkoppe is probably the one I'd most like to see be a Momma because she is totally imprinted on me and thinks I am her chicken mommy. I know she will let me see her baby(s). Her sister Cleopatra used to be super sweet too but turned wilder once puberty hit. But now that she is broody and with Ripley she puts up with my attention, LOL! I go in once a day and encourage them both to grab a bite and drink otherwise they never leave the nest - even when there were no eggs in it. I tried putting them in a special broody box but they flipped out and left the eggs and went back to the empty nest :/ So I conceded and let them have it their way for the next few weeks. Ripley rules the coop anyway so no one will mess with them. Here is Ripley sitting on her little sister Cleo. I couldn't get her to pose with her good side to me, LOL!
