My Coop
My Coop
My father was told by orschlens and our local coop that they add something/medication (don't ask me what!) to all their poultry feeds except the wild gamebird feed. I'm not sure what it is or what it treats (again, second hand info (ranting) from my father!) But he said the guy at the coop said something to the effect of "well you want it because if your chickens ever got it, it's bad!". I know this is super grey, but does anyone know if there is a medically purposed additive in most feed? Not including medicated chick feed that openly says it on the bag.

EDIT2:
Orschlens got back to me and sent me the Country Lane 16% Layer Crumble Spec sheet. Here is the Ingredient list:

Processed Grain By-Products, Grain Products, Plant Protein Products,
Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement,
Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Niacin Supplement, d-
Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Folic Acid, Menadione

All the long chemical names were googled and are all vitamin, mineral and amino acid supplements. There are NO binders, medications, mytotoxin inhibitors or any of the like. AWESOME!

Yeah, I don't think all feeds are medicated. It tells you on the bag if they are or not. You can buy medicated-layer feed, but mostly its a big thing for the chick feed (though you can buy non-medicated for them; and if you vaccinate them for a certain thing, you shouldn't use the medicated, is what I heard...one more experienced will be able to tell you more about that, probably).

Ok let me reword this. Are there any non-nutritional additives that are used to prevent some sort of disease from happening in feed. I was reading this,

http://articles.extension.org/pages/69030/additives-in-poultry-feed

and it mentions coccidostats and mycotoxin binder, both which my dad would consider medication.
Okay. I understand now. If a chicken feed contains any medication, (or non-nutritional additives) it will be stated on the bag or in the ingredients list.
