Are my hens really "Ameraucana's"

The following combinations are achievable:

• Blue X Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Black, 25% Splash
• Blue X Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black
• Blue X Splash = 50% Blue, 50% Splash
• Black X Black = 100% Black
• Splash X Splash = 100% Splash
• Splash X Black = 100% Blue

If it is called Americauna, then it is really just an EE. The real name is AmerAUcana. Hatcheries mislead people all the time by using a similar name - Americana, Americauna and sometimes the real name, Ameraucana - for EEs. Most people don't know any better and fall for it, unfortunately.

I don't know about Meyers. They're probably mixed, but I can't say for sure. I've never had them.

A lot of hatcheries do NOT misspell Ameraucana and therefor neither do the feed store that sell them because they don't know the difference. Misleading, yes. Illegal, no.

They are like the blind leading the blind in most cases.

That being said... EE are great. Will always have a couple in my flock.

And even when you buy from breeder doesn't guarantee quality... I ended up with leakage on my Black/Blue Am, and bent toes on my Salmon Faverolle, as well as my OE still laying the nice dark Marans eggs (but has sprigs and doesn't lay olive)... but one of the pure Marans doesn't lay dark enough eggs. Even show lines will not produce all show quality chicks, ever IMO. It's still a matter of selecting the best of the best from that batch.

So are you saying the hatcheries are misleading people? Lying.... I have a blue Americauna coming form Myers in April, should I assume its an imposter even though they are charging me $22 for it?

Ideal is selling EE, plain and simple. That being said, I love EE. Ordered 3 to increase my blue egg gene pool. I hatched a self blue and a blue Am last spring, nice friendly birds, especially the self blue. She's currently my favorite bird due to personality. Lays a lovely blue egg. Have quite a few BSL bred from EE that lay beautiful green/aqua/olive colored eggs.

Funny... because most of my "hatchery quality" birds seem to have less faults than my breeder quality birds! Even my flock from the coveted Green Fire Farms ended with a couple culls for incorrect shank color or sprigs. Why is it none of the birds I don't care about breeding are the ones that end up with sprigs or other faults? That's not to say my hatchery birds come anywhere near meeting their SOP.... but hey, I love having the variety of eye candy on pasture. And did what research I could on the breeder but even if a picture is worth a thousand words, there are details you just don't know.

Had 2 self blue ams... like that term better than Lavender, seems more accurate... great birds, but both boys.

Nope.... notice the Blue in front of Ameraucana? And the price.... their EE are under $3 there.

You should get a Blue Ameraucana.... but it could be black, maybe since blue doesn't breed true.

Excellent you mentioned that! This is why I don't consider cross colored ameraucana EEs because of that exact reason. A "true" recognized ameraucana breeds true to color, yet a blue will give you either blue,black, or splash, so really doesn't breed true even though blue and splash are just dilutes. Splash also is not a recognized color but still considered ameraucana and not EE. A lot of people will breed in a black to help improve feather quality, especially if breeding for lavender which is not a recognized color yet, but I assume will be eventually.

How do you get BSL from EE?

For black sexlink Easter Eggers, all you need is an Easter Egger or Ameraucana rooster and barred hens.

Agreed..... this counts as technically breeding true.

But I'm under the impression you can't discern black from blue at hatch? And no one should ever expect to get 100% blue by breeding blues.

And if you can't tell them apart, then what.... you just sell as BBS and get what you get?
