Are raw pine tree logs poisonous to chickens?

Hello everyone,
I am going to be building a chicken coops this summer. I live in a densely forested area and there are lots of pine trees. I was wondering if, cut down, I could use those pine logs to build a coop and run. Is the bark safe, is the wood safe to use, and is the sap poisonous.

Not poisonous per say, but I think the oils can cause respiratory issues.

Sounds like OP planning a “log cabin” of sorts...I’d expect no issues from a exposure to some pine bark.

Pine is not poisonous.

It wouldn't be good for the chickens to eat too many pine shavings -- they're not food, after all. Same for the pine resin. But pine wood, fresh or aged, should be fine to use in constructing the coop, making perches, etc.

Sap would be my only concern, simply because it just sticks to everything!

Could you cut the trees now, and let the wood age a bit before using?

Will you use 'round logs' or mill into lumber?

I get large flake pine shavings so they can't eat them as easily.

Also, my chickens scratch through pine needs AND they got our (real) Christmas tree last year. They were happy and healthy

Good question!
I use pine shavings in my coop without any problems.
I also put a Christmas tree in the coop for the flock to climb on. I haven’t had any problems with this.
I’m curious about answers you will get about your question about the sap.

My flock snacks on white pine needles and scratches under pine trees often. Also, pine shavings are used in the coop. No issues, so I think you’re safe!

I know that pine shavings can be poisonous if they eat enough. But not as bad as cedar. But I think as long as the boards are aged properly and you don’t get sawdust in the coop area you should be fine. If you don’t age the boards they can also shrink and split.
