The fact they are both buff (gold based) tells us they are pullets. If they were cockerels they would be split silver/gold, and be much lighter.

Good afternoon! I was hoping on some input on these gorgeous birds I lucked upon. I went to an auction and the owner of a trio of Buff Brahma Bantam was removing the cage from the line. He told me he was in the middle of a separation and his spouse had kicked him out, and to get back at him she didn't bother feeding or watering his flock for the next four days. He went back to get them, but couldn't keep them, so thus the auction. But he said he wasn't going to try to sell birds that might not survive the night, since they weren't responding to his taps on the cage. When he saw the look on my face he told me I could have them if I wanted to try to nurse them back to health. Three months later I finally had to put one of the hens down because she never recovered, and the seizures only got worse. But these two bounced back and today are two of the most gorgeous birds I think I've ever seen. I go out to my chicken yard every day and ooh and aah over them. And yes, I do trust the story, and I trust the owner to not have sold disease-sick birds. I feel so fortunate to have been there right then, because I wouldn't have given bantams a second glance, otherwise.

So, after that rambling bit of background, I'm wanting to get my granddaughter started in 4-H and thought these might be good starter birds. Can I get some opinions please? If you need extra pictures, I can get them.

Here are a couple pictures of my buff brahma rooster, he is a hatchery quality bird but I would like to know his defaults because I HOPE to breed brahmas some day....once I get some good stock to start with that is :) Keep in mind that his tail is still growing back, he wasn't getting along with the other rooster(now removed) and had a bare butt.

Now with my very untrained eye and lack of what to look for and with my handy dandy standard of perfection book at my side.....I would say :
Carries wing a little low
Has a short back
Has some black feathers in primaries, although not sure if that's the end of the world? If someone could confirm/deny
Head isnt wide enough, it does go over his eyes somewhat but just doesn't have the width I've seen in others

Those are my views, idk if they are valid or not so if I'm dead wrong let me know. Otherwise, do your worst, like I said...I know he's not mr perfect and just want to know what to start to look for.

As far as hatchery birds are concerned he's not that bad. His weight is more than likely under what it should be. His wings are carried too low. They need to be more horizontal. You want Brahmas to be nice and wide, EVERYWHERE!! Needs more buff color, it's too light. I don't like his comb. It's a little large and needs to be more carried along his head. His saddle feathers need more 'diamonding' in them. I also don't like his chest it needs to be more rounded.
Proper color pattern for wing primaries.

'diamonding' in his saddle feathers

Tail Width

Wing carriage( not the neatest in that pic. but you get the idea ).

Really not too bad. I like the fact that he is an EVEN shade of buff. His wing carriage is a bit weak. Head a bit narrow. Primaries are supposed to be mostly black with a buff line along the forward edge. Can't tell much about overall width. A photo from the rear would help. I know its very difficult to tell from photos, BUT...looks pretty decent ESPECIALLY for a hatchery bird. Weight? Age?

I'll get some more pictures today and weigh him. I also have two hens that I'll do the same for. All three are from last march. Thx for all the observations so far.
