Brain teaser/ math expert help needed!!!!

My DD's math teacher gave them a brain teaser for extra credit. No students figured it out. Can you help us???????
It is from a Sherlock Holmes comic strip. Holmes has to know the ages of the two criminals. The criminals gave him this brain teaser for him to figure out there ages.
Her it is!
I'm smith our combined age is 91. I'm twice as old as Jones was when I was as old as he is now.

Any one care to help figure out the two criminals ages?

I keep getting 31 and 31 as both of their ages. But can't really prove it out. Hard to explain!
