Bumblefoot - Calling All Crunchy Natural Folks

Whew what a day today was. Got caught up in a lot of business as we are preparing things for winter. Bought a wood burning stove today! Really excited to get it installed.

Decided to go ahead and leave Jo's foot wrapped for tonight and then we'll take it off tomorrow morning - we need to clean the coop and I was afraid if we took it off tonight he's just get his foot all yucky. We'll get it cleaned out tomorrow while they're out doing their foraging thing. I will go ahead and use coconut oil and @Amiga I love the idea of infusing comfrey - we do have some! So I'll plan on applying that each day and letting it finish healing up.

We also got a new addition to our flock today - a lovely Welsh Harlequin lady. We got her from a family who had her and her drake hatchmate, but the drake died recently - he was found in their pond and they think he may have drowned because he was molting. They have no other ducks and wanted to find another home for her where she could be a part of a flock. They said her name is Daisy. We now have 3 Khaki females, one khaki drake, two Muscovy females and one Welsh Harlequin female. I think I would love to have more Welsh Harlequins someday - been learning more about the breed and they are pretty great! And beautiful.

Daisy is beautiful and is the feature duck this week here on BYC look up Breed focus Welsh Harluiquins, Congrats on taking her she will make a lovely addition.

You'll love your wood stove just the best heat out there, messy but nice. Almost time to fire them up too.

You know to introduce Daisy slowly to your resident group. If you can get her set up where they can all see each other but not contact they will have a chance to get to know each other before they are put together, It will keep Daisy from undo stress and from getting picked on.

Jo's foot looks great!! I took the boot off and let him go for a swim in clean water and BOY was he happy. I will continue putting coconut oil on once a day for at least a few days but I am pretty sure he's healed up.

Well whaddya know? I didn't notice Welsh H's were the current duck breed focus on here - so neat!! Yes she is in her own fenced of area of the coop when they are in the coop and then when the others arr out roaming during the day i let her come out to the run for sun & fresh air. She is a quacker! Cracks me up - she'll belt it and all the others will suddenly stop what they were doing and come running to where she is as fast as they can, haha

So our wood stove... we kinda splurged. But we really wanted to get a good quality one that was low maintenance and had a long burning time and could pretty much heat our whole home. We went with a Blaze King, found a good deal on one that a dealer had sitting on display for a while. We are going to have a heckuva time transporting it and moving it in though - it's cast iron. Really excited to get it lit up on the first cold day and cook a pot of chili on it! What kind do you have Miss Lydia?

Our wood stove is a Dutch West by Vermont Casting. When we first moved here 20yrs ago we had a Grand Pa Fisher Stove but dh wanted one with a blower to get the heat all over so we sold the Fisher after about 15 yrs and bought the Dutch West. I actually like the Fisher better. Those cast iron are really heavy lots of help I am thinking to get that moved. Ours is cast iron too dh used the dolly to move it inside.

That is awesome news about JO, they are just amazing at how they can heal so well. He'll be wanting to show off for the new lady too I bet. It's so neat you were able to get her. No one trying to act aggressive through the fence? I hope not she will love having a flock to hang out with.

I think after I finish treating my hen I'll use Coconut oil on her foot while it's getting back to normal

Keep me updated on Jo and how everyone is doing..

I have heard the old stoves are better in many cases because they were made before the EPA got a hold of the industry and made all kinds of regulations. Figures :-/

After applying some coconut oil on Jo's foot this morning I decided to go ahead and keep him locked in the coop for the day because I noticed yesterday he would limp when crossing our driveway. They cross the driveway many times during the day (and it's their favorite spot for a grit buffet) so I figured he could use one more day taking it easy.

Any further progress with your hen? Swelling gone down?

So, a little story from tonight. First of all, we live out on the prairie where field mice are plenty. To help keep the population down we recently got two kittens that will be our vermin hunters when they get bigger (side note). So we're out getting the waters changed for the night and getting ready to pour their food and Daisy, the new Welsh Harlequin, is quacking away from her area in the coop as usual and then I hear "SQUEEEK SQUEEEEK SQUEEEEEK" - I look over and there's a little mouse tail and hind feet hanging from Daisy's mouth - she walks over to the water while it's still screeching and takes a drink to wash it right down! My husband and I gave her a round of applause

So you didn't need the kittens after all. LOL Kittens are cute though and can help out of the duck pens.
I am glad mine eat them too but I would just soon not watch or frog either , yuck .

Probably a good idea to keep Jo up a while longer just to make sure it is healed, was there a hole in his foot once the scab came off? usually there is. My hen will be getting her wrap off today so i can check her out.

When do you think you'll try Daisy with the rest of the gang?

About the wood stoves well when we bought this Dutch West we had the choice between the one with the catalytic converter or reg, goodness after ready all that went into using the catalytic converter one we chose the reg. We've used wood stoves from almost 38 years to late for us to go with the new fangled ones. lol

Let me know how you like yours once you start using it.

Haha yeah maybe Daisy will be the one to teach the kittens how to be mousers :) I don't want to see a duck eat a frog either! Though I am sure ours already have - we had a lot of frogs because we got so much rain during the spring/early summer. I read somewhere that ducks can down an 8-inch slug - whole - with little effort....

Hope your hen is doing better now! Jo's foot actually didn't have a hole - it was kind of more like human skin is when a scab comes off the top; new tender skin underneath. I am guessing that must be because the bumble must have been caught real early?

The stove we got has a catalytic converter and SUPPOSEDLY this particular manufacturer is known for making good long-lasting catalytic converters that require little messing with. Hope it's true! I'm a little giddy with excitement about getting this stove in - I grew up always having one in our home and it's quite nostalgic for me.

Oh and I am not sure when I am planning on integrating Daisy with the others. With incubated-hatched ducklings I always waited until they were a couple months old and could handle being picked on. But I guess since she is full-grown she should be able to hold her own. There is one female khaki that tries to pick at her through the fence, so we might end up with a little roughing up between those two for a bit.

Some times moving everyone out of their comfort zone throws off the pecking order too. Like the dominant duck if she is picking you remove her and put her in where Daisy is then start from there. But be careful because lately we have heard of some pretty messed up ducks after being put in with new flock . shoving and pushing is one thing but blooding up is way serious.

That's good about Jo's foot, always great to catch it early. My hen still has some swelling but it is much better so I used the iodine again and wrapped. I'll check her again on Thursday and maybe start the coconut oil.

Sorry to be short but I only have a moment. What do I do if I think a duck may be egg bound? If she gets up, she soon after just wants to lay down again.

Thank you in advance for any info you can provide.
